Shotgun Personal Protection Ammo
I recently purchased a Mossberg Model 500 Persuader shotgun. What is the recommended ammunition for in-home personal protection? I have read that large pellet loads can go through walls and small pellet loads will not penetrate heavy clothing. Since the alternative is a handgun, I don't feel that the wall penetrating capability of a OO buck load is a reason to not consider this load. Also, 2 3/4 or 3 inch? Thanks in advance for your reply and opinions.

We have always used #7 birdshot in our home protection shotguns. We tested several loads and found that much larger than #7 would penetrate 2 to 3 layers of sheetrock. Ask yourself who else lives in your house, and how many layers of sheetrock away are they.

There is an easy way for you to decide what size shot and what size shell to use. Go to your local hardware store or stop by a building site and ask them if you can hav a scrap piece of sheet rock. Take it outside in the country and test the loads and size shells, than you will know which one to use. We have both of our riot guns loaded with 3" 000 and find that for our home that is best. Another factor is to consider at what range you will use the weapon. Good testing.[:D] 0 -
A study conducted by the FBI recommends useing no.4 Buck.I dont have the information here on the FBI's study to give you their exact reason's.But you have more pellets and the no.4 Buck doesnt seem to over penetrate as bad as some of the other loads.HTH

I use 00 buck in 2 3/4". Yes I do want the penetration in case of heavy clothing or maybe I have to shoot through furniture. I have no concern of wall penetration. If I had family in the home or lived in an apartment this would be a different matter. Keep in mind that a bullet from a handgun will go through the wall just as easy.
I suggest that you pattern your shotgun with what ever shell you go with. Shoot at "in the home" distances. You will be surprised how small the pattern will be. In other words, your aim must be dead on even though your using a scattergun.
I can not urge you enough to put a light on your Persuader to prevent an accident in the dark.

The Persuader is a great little lead hose if it's loaded with #4 lead shot in a 2 3/4" shell.
My walls are block, so I don't care if there's a little ricochet action-whatever catches the most pellets loses.
I also load 2 slugs into the tube first, so I can have some of that penetration if I need it-then fill up the rest with promotional federal #4's. You don't have to spend a lot to get what you want.
Have you seen the detachable 10-rounder for the 500? There's a thread on here somewhere... looks cool!

i may get laughed at for this one but i have an old ithaca 37 in my bedroom closet loaded with 3 shotgun slugs. i dont want to tear-up my house, on the other hand, if i hit someone with a slug, the parties over. 0 -
#4 or OO Buck, good penetration without being excessive. #6 or #7 is real good CLOSE, but it decels real quick and penetration becomes an issue. If you live in an apartment use #7 if you live in a house use #4 or better. I live in an apartment and use OO Buck (neighbors be damned[;)])

My Mossberg is loaded with #7 in 2 3/4" shells. Good "room distance" round that won't go through walls to hit family members. Even if it isn't a 1 shot stop, I would imagine taking a hit from that would put most criminals in a fleeing sort of mood.
