carry gun recommendations
im in training as a reserve police officer..my duty gun is a sig p226 40 cal...i want to get a general purpose carry gun with out dupliating the cost i had to pay for the sig.ouch...lol...need any advice on decent models/brands that may be out there and what calibers...im hoping to use it as a back up as well..thanks for any input

General rule of thumb: The biggest caliber that you can shoot well, carry comfortably, and conceal well.
For me, it's a Colt (LW) Commander in .45acp.0 -
mine is a Kimber ultra carry in .45 acp

My recommendation is stick to what you use - the Sig. If price is an issue, either save for a while or look for a good deal on a used one. Expecially since the Sig has a peculiar set up.
You don't want to find out at the wrong moment that you've gotten confused over training with two different handguns.
Got a new gun for my ex-wife.....pretty good trade, huh?0 -
Familyguy hit it on the head. If you're gonna carry something on and off of duty, you need to keep the systems at least similar. You want to be really familiar with all the controls because when you need it you won't be mentally available to figure out where the safety is or where the mag release is. First bullet that flies past your head really rearranges your thinking processes[:0]

Don't be afraid of the price, coffins and the funeral that go with one cost more.
Any carry pistol you get should be simular in function and should be one that you can shoot well, for the reasons that have been stated.
Did you get a letter from your chief and purchase your duty gun with a law enforcement discount? If not, you spent waaaaaaay to much.

Ayoob recently pointed out that many who carry off duty have been choosing to carry larger caliber and/or larger capacity firearms, partly due to the possible threat of terrorism. I think it's sufficient to remember one's life and the lives who one might protect are worth the same effort regardless of being on or off the clock. Evil is always at work.

Kris I am new to this forum, but I am also LEO, and although the info given is good for non LEO, So far the best advise has come from Mat45 DON'T BE CHEAP. If you can't afford a high quality pistol spend your money on ammo and practice with your sig
You have other considerations when you say you want to carry a backup. You know what rule 1 is (you go home safe) so a back up must not print if it does it's almost useless. 2nd carry the same caliber as your primary weapon. If you have a failure of your primary weapon you can strip cartridges from your duty mags if need be. 3rd A back up should have no external safeties. you may well be injured and unable to use your strong hand to operate safeties.
I carry a Kahr P40 for me its the best. I tried a glock 27 but had trouble maintaining control with my week hand during rapid fire.0 -
Most of the cops around here carry a .40 Taurus Millenium (Stainless, night sights) in ankle holsters. Primary weapon is Sig. 0 -
GET A FIRESTAR .45 THEY WORKS VERY WELL AND SMALLER.

Two main schools of thought going here, both equally credible. 1. Get the same as the one you will carry on duty. Familiar with both systems because they are the same. 2. Back up gun free of any safety, simple point and shoot in time of emergency. I can't give one more weight over the other. But, I cant count how many times I was at the range with friends shooting different pistols. I carry a Beretta 92 and when I am handed a Glock I have caught myself reaching with my thumb to flip the safety that is not there. i don't carry a backup and when I am off, I conceal the 92. I would like something smaller, but after time, I have grown quite comfortable with the big 92.
