what is a 358 STA cartridge??

Just bought a remington 700 bdl with a custom barrel and it's marked 358 STA. can anyone tell me about this round.

  This is a 358 cal rifle for BIG game.
  It is the 358 Shooting Times Alaskan or African,I forget which.
  It is based on the Remington 8 MM Magum case.
  I will try and find more info tonite,I think I have some articles and reloading info at the house.

  Shooting Times Alaskan. Wild cat developed by the guys at the gun rag of that name. They did the Eastern and Western too. Their answer to an unasked question.

  Actually developed by Layne Simpson. Does there have to be a reason for everything? Up until the 358 STA came along, there was not a 35 caliber cartridge that would reach 3000 FPS with a 250 grain bullet. This makes for a real good bear and elk cartridge.

  At the present time it is strictly a handloading proposition. The 8mm Remington Mag case must be necked up or if you can find any, the 416 Remington Mag necked down. then the case must be fire-formed to final shape. It is a very good cartridge, but will probably never see factory status. As close as it will come to factory production is the Winchester Custom shop. They will make you a custom M70 in that chambering. For some reason the only 35 that has ever lasted is the lowly 35 Remington. Remington introduced the 35 Whelan a few years ago and have already dropped it. Most people get a 338, 340 Weatherby, or a 375 H&H. Let me know if you decide to get rid of it, I like the 35's.

  Just as a small correction, the 350 Wells Express was created and shot in the mid 50's shortly after the introduction of the .378 Weatherby on which it is based. The .378 was necked down to 35 caliber. It exceeded 3000 fps. then and supercedes that now. With appropriate modern powders, the 250 grain bullets can approach 3300 fps.
