Your opinion of the 35 Whelen
I just purchased my first 35 Whelen caliber rifle. What is your opinion of this cartridge? How does it compare to the 30-06, 270Win
and other similiar calibers? Are there any problems I should expect when reloading? Any information based on your experience will be appreciated.
Thanks

There's really nothing wrong with the caliber...Usually it was built around a Shotout 30-06 Barrel...I've owned several over the years..and its deffinately safe to say...its big and bad enough for anything on the American Continent...I'm sure that Cartridges of the World has a lot more to say than I did about the 35 Whelen.......

I live in Oregon and we some time have long shots, you have to hold over a little, but when that bullet gets their it will drope any thing you hit. and most I have been around are ACC. You should be pleased with it, good luck 0 -
My friend has one built on a Springfield '03. Shillen barrel, Timney trigger. Factory stuff didnt shoot too well, about 2 1/2 in. Handloads put two in one hole and the third just a bit out for a 3/4 inch group. The only problem we ran in to was reloading nickel cases. They were tight sizing and one eventually got stuck. The dies were RCBS and we broke the decapper getting the case out. RCBS sent us new pins no charge and told us that they have had this happen before when loading nickel cases. Switched to regular brass and no problems so far.

Thanks guys for the information. My rifle should arrive next week and I'll be anxious to try it out on the range. Thanks for the reloading tip - I try to avoid using the nickle cases for all my reloads - I'll be sure to buy brass cases for this caliber.
Henry - it was darn nice of you to go to the trouble to search the auctions to find a 35 Whelen for me - did you notice the person selling the rifle has the same name as you???
Once again - thanks everyone for your feedback - its appreciated!
