1895 and 1896 Krag
OK questions about two different guns both Krag's.
First a Winchester 1895 lever action in 30-40 Krag it has been reblued fairly well but you can tell and the guy admits that it has been. Was wondering what any one on here thinks would be a fair price for it. Asking price is $850 thought that was a bit high being as it has been reblued.
Second a 1896 Springfield Krag. Shouldn't this model have the selector switch on it (feed from mag or top feed)? What kind of rear sight should it have on it? And should it have a safty on the rear f the bolt or on the left side of the recvier?
Third are there any excellent books out there about Krags (Springfield)

All the Krags should have the selector switch but like mine many had it removed & replaced with a side mounted peep sight. Not a major problem since it reqired no change to the gun & can be easily changed back if you can get the parts.
Actually now that I look at it there may have been an alteration.
I believe there was a hole drilled & tapped into the left side
magazine cover to secure the sight mount.0 -
Regarding your question about reference books on the U. S. Military Krag Rifle. The best one I know of is "Krag Rifles" by William S. Brophy, unfortunately it's now out of print. It would probably cost you $150 to $250 for a used copy! 0 -

I assume that we are talking about rifles as you don't give any barrel lengths. First, the Winchester model 1895, the .30-40 Krag chambering is the most common of those found in the model 1895. Standard barrel length is 28 inches. To get $850 for a common, reblued model 1895 the condition of the bore had better be excellent plus. Try offering $650 and work up from there.
On the Krag, the switch that you are talking about is called the Magazine Cutoff and yes, there should be one. Again, you are correct, the rear of the bolt should have the safty. It looks just like the one on the Mauser rifle and works in just the same way. To tell if you have an original 1896 bolt, look at the underside of the bolt handle. There should be a short flat milled where the lug meets the round part of the handle. On the 1898 bolt this flat is about twice as long. The proper rear sight has a smooth tangent curve base marked on the left side 3 to 6 for 300 to 600 yards. The standing leaf is marked from 7 to 18 for 700 to 1800 yards. There are two modles of this sight, the first model has a small headed binding screw on the elevation slide, while the second model has a large headed binding screw. Rifle rear sights are not marked as to the weapon that they go to, but, carbine sights are marked with the letter "C" on both the base and the leaf. The wood handguard for the rifle should be flat, with no "hump" at the forward end.
