ICONCLAST: collectable ammunition prices and info
we are selling off an estate for a widow whose husband was a frequent and well liked customer. we have valued, priced up, and disposed of most of the guns and reloading equipment. all with little real effort exept for one item.
a custom built wooden and glass case about the size of a phone book. glass front, blue felt lined rear. it contains 14 rounds of ammunition, lined up from smallest (right) to largest (left). on the base/stand is an engraved brass placard listing the cartridge identities.

i have identified most of them, i think. #`s 4, & 10 i am not quite certain of. the rounds are all in NRA EXCELLANT condition or better.
the deceased worked for the armorment industry in england and spain in the 60`s and 70`s. the item was a gift from a former employer.
we have two buyers, but are not sure what a fair price is. the item still resides at the widows home, i inspected it on an appraisal visit. she wants to sell it to one of the two bidders, but is unsure of a price. i was thinking of starting it of at $250.00. both bidders were friends of the deceased. they insist on a fair price for the widow. what do you think (yes, i would love to put it on my mantel, but the seller insists it be auctioned between the two bidders) i am supposed to arrive at a value.

I would say this assortment is worth a minimum of $400 at present market.
These are the guidelines, as best as I can articulate them, of my personal grading system which I use in correlating values:
F = some significant stains or some small dents, no corrosion
G = minor stains or several freckles
VG = few freckles or possibly a light finger print
EX = possibly showing some signs of age such as dulled surface but otherwise pristine
Mint = looks like it was made yesterday, but has *not* been cleaned / polished to attain such an appearance.

ICONCLAST,
i took a second look at the item. all the rounds are in the G-VG range as far as condition goes. i cannot get the case apart without a proffesional carpenter/woodworkers services. i am afrain of destroying it. it is sealed with brass brads, and brass screws. all of the rounds appear to be original. the widow says he recieved the item in 1976. i cannot get a look at the headstamps. the rounds are inset in slotted/mortised grooves of varying diameter.
the 6MM LEE-NAVY is rimmless, and has a silver jacketed bullet.
the 12.7x77 has a red and yellow banded bullet.
the 12.7x80sr has a black painted bullet.
the .55 boys is a vivid yellow.
the 13x92sr is a silver jacketed bullet.
the brass ID placard was tarnished and going green. i polished it up, and oiled the wood. the felt background has faded somewhat. i also cleaned the glass, and the marble base(trophy style).
i do not think this was ever ment to be opened. i asked permission to have a local antique funiture restorer/dealer crack it open, but was turned down. sorry i cannot be more informative. i offered to buy it outright, or to sell it on GB, but was rebuffed. the base of the item is stamped "EIBAR" and has a "RAMPANT LION" marking on it. best regards, mike.

the item went for $425.00 to the higher bidder. i think he did quite well. i wish it had ended up on my mantle...maybe next time. best regards, mike.
