10/22 question
I have a ruger 10/22 and i shot it a bit this weekend. One thing I noticed is that the bolt does not stay open after the last round is fired. is this normal for this gun? I never really paid attention to it before...but I want to know if this is something that I need to fix before doing anything else to it.

I was wondering how you take the front sight off the barrel on a ruger 10/22. I drove out the blade, but is the base permanently attached? Dont wanna start pounding on it if its not going anywhere.

I was noticing that on a bunch of 10/22s we have at the shop. I would have sworn when you pull the bolt back they should lock open. They don't though.

Drobs...thanks for the reply. I noticed that too. the bolt release on the 10/22 is sort of awkward. it won't stay open when you pull it back on an empty chamber and when you fire the last shot. Oh well...its not a big deal...but I would like for it to stay open if its possible.

Yeah, they don't just lock open on the last shot but
if you pull the charging handle to the rear and push
the bolt lock (funny looking thin piece of metal on the
front of the trigger assembly) it will/should lock open.0 -
Thanks again for the reply...I knew about the bolt release lever/funny looking metal piece..but was sort of confused. I thought it should stay open...but I guess not. anywho...I had a lot of fun with the gun and look forward to getting another to dress it up...just wasn't sure if I got a lemon or not. Thanks again.

It doesn't stay open after the last round. My only serious complaint about the 10/22. You have to count. At least dropping the pin on a empty chamber doesn't seem to have to many ill effects on a 10/22, I've done it virtually every magazine thru mine for probably 30-40 thousand rounds 0 -
Ironically, their big-brother (the .44 mag carbine) that looks just like the 10/22 has the last shot retention system.

Silverbox, I agree, that is absolutely the only thing I've got bad to say about them...0 -
And all this time I thought that last shot bolt hold open that I took for granted on my $75 Marlin was standard on those pricey Rugers. [:o)]

I almost bought a Marlin 60 instead of the 10/22 for exactly that reason.0 -
Silver, only problem with the Marlin 60 is loading that tube gets to be a pain in the neck. I don't shoot it as much anymore for that reason. Otherwise it's accurate as heck. Can't sell it since Mom gave it to me as my 1st rifle when I was 13. Been thinking about getting a Papoose though recently. Looks kinda fun. [;)]
