Are AR-15 (or clone) legal in CA?
I heard somewhere there was a ban on "military style" rifles in CA. I am looking to buy a used AR-15 for general plinking/varmit hunting. Wondering if it is legal to own a post-ban AR-15 or clone in California, if it is legal to own are there any special conditions?
thanks a lot.

None of the AR-15's are legal in calif anymore.
If you had one before the ban, and registered it you could keep it, and then only shoot it at approved ranges.
By AR-15's Iam refering to all of the look-a-likes also. If it is a center fire, uses detachable magazines, has a pistol grip that protrudes below the action, and is semi-auto, then it is considered an "Assualt Rifle".0 -
man thats just criminal! I hate CA! I did hear however they make ones with a 10 round "internal" magazine I just saw this like 2 min ago, looks interesting. 0 -
One more thing.... you mentioned "military style rifles". Military rifles such as the M-1 Carbine, Springfield M1A, M-1 Garand etc are still legal in Cal. A good rule, If it does not have a pistol grip, then it is probably OK. 0 -
this really pisses me off, after shooting those rifles a little while back I really fell in love with them. I guess ill just have to settle for a rem. 700 police. My 2nd choice, but im still looking into this "cali legal ar-15" but im pretty lost. 0 -
Yes,, there is a company that makes an AR type lower with a fixed 10 round mag, and it is cal legal.
I have also seen a "pump action" AK-47 type that is also cal legal.
The pump AK is not of the highest quality.0 -
ive never been too fond of any AK's myself. Do you know of any compaines that sell complete AR-15's with the cali legal lower reciever? 0 -
I have seen the fixed 10 rnd mag lowers for sale in the Shotgun News, But I dont recall the name of the company.
If I run across it, I will put it here.0 -
The Ca legal are offered by:www.redstarmuseum.com
They are terrible looking and expensive. I have reviewed them first
hand. Only possible interest would be a California resident-and then never have any interest by another state purchaser. Across the street from: Martin B. Retting. As a Vet and (01) dealer, I wanted to purchase a rifle similar to the M16, my mistress. This is a far cry from my M16. Can not be called an AR-15. 1010 -
wow thanks for the response! I was thinking it might be exactly the same as the AR-15 but with 10 round internal mag, which i guess i could get used to but you say it has other ****ty properties? What else is differnt about it? 0 -
Complete AR15, the California version, is available from www.atlanticfirearms.com. $889
Let's change the laws and quit bickering about them. One man CAN change the status quo.0 -
I'd be willing to bet that if you HAD to, you could convert it to take detachable mags...if you moved to a free state.
