Best way to remove engraved Name & ID

I just bought an old single action copy at an estate auction. The previous owner had his name & social or DL written with an engraving pen under the barrel, by the ejector rod area.

Sandpaper? Dremel? Buffing/grinding wheel?

  Unless the previous owner was VERY famous and you have letters of provenance, the gun has already been defaced for any collector value.A lot of the time ElectroPencil marks can be removed by polishing/buffing with a good rouge as they aren't normally to deep. At any rate a refinish would be in order

  Leave refinishing to professionals. It is cheaper in the long run.

  Remove extractor tube, get 180 or 220 grit emery tape. With gun held securely place length of tape across (90 degrees) to barrel. With tape in contact with lettering pull the tape taut, and work it back and forth in 'shoe shine' fashion. When lettering is removed, change to finer emery, maybe finer and finer till you get desired surface. If you can't find emery tape, buy a tape for a 1" belt sander and cut as necessary, or, buy emery cloth and cut into 1" strips. Before doing this on your gun, get some experience by doing it on an iron rod, piece of pipe, etc. I have used this method for years, mostly to remove pitting, and with care it will clean off the surface without leaving flat places and, if refinished properly, is almost impossible to detect. Dry wall abraisive cloth works fine for this too. Hope this helps.

  If you go that route, be sure to oil the emery cloth first. It'll make the cuts shallower so you can polish it smoothly without cutting away too much metal. I'd start with oiled 400 grit and work down to 800 grit, but it depends on the machining finish of the barrel and how deep the engraving is.

  Two seperate posts. The other post is on a Colt SAA. This post is about a Hawes Western Marshall which is a Copy. Question was not should I or Shouldn't I, but what would be the best way too...
