Bought one back in 87 for my father. He still has it, and carries it often and he is a revolver man. I would not rate it as high as a Colt but I like it and for the price it is well worth it. At the time they came out their claim to fame was double action and carried 8+1. Hope this helps.

I got one of the early ones under Smith's "Stocking Dealer" program and still have it. Mine has been very reliable. However, I have learned that the chamber is tighter than a similar vintage Colt, at least on mine. When I got it, I was shooting it side by side with the Colt to compare, and the reloads I was shooting were sometimes too fat to chamber in the Smith, but would chamber easily in the Colt. At the time, a double action stainless .45 was the ultimate, and the M645 was the only one. The price is very attractive and would be a great buy at that figure. I think you will like it.

I also have an early 645 serial number 440X. I have been very pleased with it. It is very accurate, often out shooting the Colt Gold Cup. I agree with Judge Colt that the chambers are a little tighter then those found on the Colt, however, if you reload you can allow for this. With factory ammo there is no problem. For $375 it would already be in my safe!
