The last S&W's marked "Made in USA" only, were made during 1947.I forget the exact reason they added the the 4 line markings, something to do with trademark recognition and all of the Spanish copies.

Smith & Wesson was sold to Bangor Punta in 1965. I think it was BP who used the "Marcas Registradas" on the guns.

BP sold S&W to Lear Siegler in 1984. Tomkins P.L.C. then bought S&W in 1987. They were the British company.

Most recently S&W was bought by Saf-T-Hammer corp in Arizona. That was in 2001.

LL, as Barrocky says, the "Marcas Registratas" markings began close to twenty years before Bangor Punta bought Smith & Wesson in 1965. What source made you think Bangor Punta originated the marking?

I too believe it was the Spanish copies that prompted the markings, probably after filing trademarks in Spain.
