Trap and Skeet
What is the difference between trap guns and skeet guns. Some guns have skeet chokes ( which I guess spreads the shot ) and some trap guns have full or extra full chokes. [?]

After many years of pistol shooting, I want to start shooting skeet and trap at a local club. Right now the only gun that I own that would get me started is a 1972 Remington ll00 with 28" mod and 30" Full choke barrels - neither is a vent rib. Is this sufficient to get me started? Could I still get a skeet barrel for this gun? 0 -
Critter,,,, Yes your 1100 is fine to get started. I would stick with the 28" barrel with the mod choke for trap, and see if you can buy a more open choke for skeet, like IC or skeet. Your full choke barrel will also work for trap, but will have tighter patterns.
If you get hooked, then go out and but a new gun specifically for target shooting.0 -

The Rem. 1100 is an excellent shotgun to start shooting trap(I have never shot skeet). I suggest you try the 30 in. barrel. The longer sight radius is an advantage for trap. When you have gained a little experience you may opt for a vent rib trap barrel, raised cheek, adjustable butt pad or go to a break open style shotgun. The 1100 also does a good job of reducing felt recoil. Good Luck! 0 -
Check on gun broker and all of the other sites for either a skeet barrel or one that has remchokes. Try to borrow someones 1100s with 26 and 28 inch barrels and see which you like best. 0 -
Bayou, You might be opening a can of worms that you won't be able to close[:D] Skeet and trap and sporting clays are alot of fun, very addictive and a good way to hone your hunting skills.
As far as your 1100 is concerned, if that's also the gun you hunt with, then it's perfect to start out on for skeet and trap and sc's.
It's like golf, the only person you're trying to beat is yourself.
Later on in the game you may opt to go to special guns just for this purpose. That's where the money comes in.
Good luck and have fun. A real trophy in skeet shooting is when you get a perfect 25 hits and all the members get to shoot your hat.

Thanks for the help. I can't wait to give it a try. My hope is to use the 1100 until I get hooked. Then I can decide what gun would be more suitable for my needs and upgrade. 0 -
bayou, when you decide to upgrade let me know, I've got some nice Browning Citoris. I got one competition trap Citori with monte carlo stock and 32" O/U invector chokes, a truly beautiful gun for about a grand. Or if you're ever in the Dallas area you can try one on for size and see if ya like 'em. 0
