Not quite a .308, but certainly more powerful than a 30-30. Most similar power wise standard cartridge would be a .300 savage. Pretty much need to reload and form your own brass unless you like shelling out 1.50 per round for Norma. I wouldn't cut up a perfectly good military mauser in that caliber, but if I ran across one that had been I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Be careful though, some I have seen were converted to 30-06.

Why does everyone feel the need to burn that much powder?

Concur with Bugman, it is a mild-recoil, good, servicable round. Certainly suitable for most almost anything in north and south America except perhaps polar bear.

    A few notes to add:

Regarding handloading, the round uses a .313" bullet which is quite odd. In practice, .311" and .312", both of which are available, work fine. Some that were rechambered to 30-06.... well the 06 uses a .308 bullet which is getting to be just too loose IMHO, but if you reload, a rifle rechambered to 30-06 would do fine if loaded with fatter bullets.

Stay on the mild side for loads for the 1891 action. Certainly any published load should do just fine. I never advise to exceed these loads but with the later 1909 action, that is a 98 action, you could probably push it a little more.

I have a 1891 carbine, I use it for a brush gun and have killed 3 deer. no problems and it is very acc. I put a recevier sight on it and took off the top wood, I love it. I cut 1/2" off of 30-06 cases and run them in to the Die for cases, better yet is 8mm cases. I got mine 30 some years ago it was unfired, gave $29.95. With the cost of the recever sight and front sight and dies and sling. I have $100.00 in it, and love it.
