FAL firing out of battery
Since the falfiles is going through some updates and I'm too dumb too figure out what they are doing, I'll ask my question here. I have an FAL that every so often fires out of battery and results in total case separation. NOT GOOD! At first I thought it might be the hammer following the bolt down, but I changed the H,T&S to FSE parts. Then I thought it might be a form of slam fire. Tried to duplicate it using a primed case (bullet and powder removed from same ammo that I was using) and dropping bolt using bolt stop so it had plenty of velocity to drive FP forward. After 20 cycles all I had was a bit of a dented primer. Checked headspace. Closes cleanly on GO but doesn't even begin to close on NO GO. My thought is that perhaps the headspace is borderline and if I get a round that is just a wee bit large it doesn't allow bolt to lock up. I really don't want to go through the expense of having the locking shoulder changed, unless I have some reasonable expectation of solving the problem. Any thoughts?
Also, is there any way to tell the size of the locking shoulder without taking it out?

First thing that comes to mind is the firing pin is sticking in forward position, this will cause early ignition destroying case and spraying hot brass in all directions, only other problem that I can imagine would be high primers. 0 -
Hey Roy, are you using reloads? or Are you using military surplus ammo?
You should actually use the mil-spec stuff because of the harder primers in a fal/liai/g3/cetme. They are designed to have that pesky roller locking thingie that slows the bolt; slam fires can occur if the rollers are dirty and you use reloads with civilian primers.
Just be glad you have BOTH halves of your separated brass!

When you say "it fires out of battery" do you mean you have squeezed the trigger with the bolt not fully closed? Or are you refering to a slam fire where the gun fires when the bolt closes on a live round and detonates without pulling the trigger?
If your refering to the former might I suggest a couple of things.
1. Your headspace does sound tight for a military weapon. All FAL's I know of will close on a No-Go and most will close on a field guage.
2. does this happen with differant types of ammo? Or just one type.
3. Are you using a recoil buffer? If so remove it and test fire.
4. Is the gas system adjusted properly?
Sorry but the only way I know to determine the size of a locking shoulder is to mike it. Try the other things before the headspace.0 -
JC- FP was the 1st thing I thought of. Took it out polished with some 500 emery cloth so I could see if there was scratches or burrs or anything else that could cause it to stick. Reassembled it and cycled it a few times. Removed pin and checked but didn't see any marks indicating a burr in the bolt.
GN505- I've experienced it with Port. surplus, reloads and some 1965 LC MATCH.I'm not sure what you are talking about as far as the roller. I haven't seen anything resembling one in my FAL. I think the HK clones have something like that but I wasn't aware of it in an FAL.
TJ-Actually it happens both ways.
1. I am leaning that way. The outside of the locking shoulder is stamped 10.3 which roughly corresponds to .262. Thinking of going to .260 or maybe even .259.

4. Good question. When I first got the rifle I followed the adjustment procedure and everything seemed ok. Used the LC Match ammo. When I changed ammo I wanted to see if the adjustment was still valid. By this time I had experienced a couple of "foob"s so
that is why I changed ammo. Here is the interesting part. I have the port wide open and it still engages the bolt stop. falfiles was still up then and I asked about it. Gary Jeter, who is apparently very knowledgeable about FALs said that it was not uncommon and he had two or three rifles that were that way and he had no problem shooting them. I'm thinking that may be the root of the problem. I have checked the return springs and they are not broken or kinked. Same for gas piston (new USA from TAPCO) and spring. This rifle is, I imagine like being married to a bitch for a wife. Love her but damn sure makes life miserable.
