S&W Model 19

What is my Smith&Wesson Model 19, 3" barrel, nickel finish, NEVER fired complete with box worth?

  Pre 1980. What are the pros and cons of this hand gun? [8D]

  All the model 19's were very nice guns. The most obvious change after 1980 was probably the elimination of the pinned barrel and the counter bore in the cylinder, also known as resessed cylinder.
  
  There were some other changes like elimination of the 6" barrel in 1996, and going to blue finish only in 1992. Most of the other changes were internal. The model 19 was discontinued in 1999.
  I have 2 older model 19's, a 2.5" and a 6", and they are both high quality guns.

  Greg... The pinning of the barrel was a way of securing the barrel to the frame. It was introduced in 1899 and discontinued in 1982.
  
  The pin was driven through the frame and outer part of the barrel at the point where it screws into the frame just forward of the cylinder. If you look at some older Smith's it is very obvious.
  
  Iam not sure why they stopped pinning the barrels, but they may have improved the threading and realized the pins were no longer needed, just a guess.

  The pinned barrel and the recessed chambers were meaningless. Colt never did it and nobody questions the quality of those guns. It was just that when S&W started eliminating these things the more conservative shooters took it as a sign of lowering quality.
  
  There's nothing wrong with a Model 19. Maybe not as strong as the newer and larger L frame guns, it will still out live you with any amount of ammo of factory loading or equivalent.

  I have had a Mod. 19 - 4" since the late 70's. Carried it as a duty revolver when I was a deputy game warden.Also used it a few times to shoot PPC.Probably put 2 or 3 thousand rounds through it without a problem.
