shipping a rifle by mail how do I do it?

  The official explanation is in USPS Pub 52, pages 63-67. Download it from the USPS website.
  
  Basicly, it must be unloaded and not prohibited under GCA 1968. You can ship to a nonlicensee within your own state, or to a licensee in any other state; the recipient must be legally able to possess the rifle.
  
  Pack well and insure it fully. There should be nothing on the package that identifies it as a firearm. I use Priority Mail. There is no need for you to declare the contents of the package to the clerk; however, they have the right to ask you to open the package to be sure that the rifle is unloaded, if they know that it is a gun.

  I always ship guns via UPS on the rare occasions I sell something from my collection. They DO ask what is in the boxes on their forms though I have never had any trouble with shipping, other than a clerk asking if it was for repair. Though I said no they never gave trouble.

  According to my Postmaster, you can legally ship a long gun to yourself, even across state lines. You MUST be the one who opens the package, if it is across state lines. Try calling your post office.
