.223 reloading
I have a bushmaster which i would like to reload for. When i shot some of the reloads through it, it did not function right. It would eject the fired round but will not pick up the next one. What is a good load using IMR 4198. Thanks for any input.

sometimes the semis have to have a load near maximum for the action to function properly, possibly that's why the next shell is not picking up,just a thought,Bob. 0 -
Hi Hunter,
I have shot alot of reloaded 223 in my old CAR-15. I used a 55 grain FMJ bullet and 21 grains of 4198. 22 grains is listed as max so approach with caution. What bullet are you using, and what cases?
Speer recommends reducing the load by 10% when using military cases because they are heavier walled.

Im using a 55 gr sp. and remington cases. I worked up to the 22 gr. mark. They fed ok then. But on the last round it is supposed to hold back the bolt. It did not. I put in some factory ammo. Fed great and held the bolt back on last round. 0 -
Of the 4 or 5 guys I know who reload and shoot .223 in Bushmasters, NO ONE has had any luck with IMR 4198. In the Bushmaster rifle it consistantly short-strokes the bolt indicating not enough gas. All of us use Winchester 748, In my 55Gr. Mil. FMJ w/Collet, and 55Gr. JHP w/ Collet I load 24.5 Grains of Win748. Out of my 20" Hvy Bbl I can achive offhand groups of 1.5" at 110 yds-not too shabby.

I had problems with IMR4198 in my 20" AR-15, it would eject the fired case, but wouldn't pick up a fresh round. I think 4198 is to fast of a power in a 20' barrel. Chamber pressure and port pressure are differant animals. 0 -
you need to check your C.O.L(case overall length) to make sure that it falls within .223 limits. 0 -
Wow- Thanks rordog, sometimes I'm a little too close to the problem to see it- but too fast of a powder vs. longer Bbl does make a lot of sense.
ohiohog- Nahh, COL isn't an issue in my case, myself and my buds are nazi's about trimming to length.
