Stainless steel barrel vs. steel barrel
Other than corrosion and cost, what are the major pros and cons between a stainless steel barrel and a steel barrel?

It's machining qualities make it the desireable material for match barrels. I beleive it has a greater lubricity?.. Specifics are better given by a gunsmth on that one.

Stainless was what I was referring to. I believe more of a mirror finish can be lapped into the lands and grooves of stainless barrels, as well as the use of less pressure to pull a button through them or to single point cut the rifling. Carbon steel is harder and therefore tougher to machine to the tolerances that stainless can be cut/finished to, but a gunsmith or metalurgist would better serve the topic and no doubt provide a better answer.

Does that mean that a softer stainless barrel will not last as long as a harder carbon steel barrel under the same conditions?

The life of stainless barrels is somewhat longer that carbon steel. The stainless is actually more dificult to machine due to abraision resistance hence the higher cost. It will take much more abuse than carbon like not being cleaned for hundreds of rounds actually thousands. had an M1A with over 15,000 thru it cleaned a dozen times give or take a few, usually when the bolt started to stick. still shot 1/4 moa when I sold it. 0 -

GPWEAPON, Why did you sell it? I would be willing to bet that whatever you replaced it with won't match that record!!!! As far as stainless versus carbon, I think that (notice the I think part) stainless barrels are a little harder to break in than carbon but after that is done they may last a few hundred more rounds before time to turn into boat anchors! Haven't worn enough of either out to make a firm decision!! Will start working on a new stainless barrel tomorrow though!! That is after the morning turkey hunt and the midday journey to a new groundhog spot that the instructions were to "KILL THE D... THINGS"!!! DON"T LET ANY OF THEM GO!!!!" So be it! It will be done! DS and crew and Levi and his new 6x284 will take care of business! Hopefully pics will follow!! GHD 0 -
The difference is that stainless looks really cool on synthetic stocks, whereas blued barrels look best with wood stocks. [:D] 0 -

GHD I needed the money. I did trade a long range gun in 7mm Dakota last fall that is a carbon to what I sold with a new kreiger 1-10 got out the first time last week to start working up loads both guns were double lugged with McMillians on armscore recievers $2,000. + guns. 0 -
The pair of M21's I shot wouldn't pull that group, so you must have been in need of cash!!!!!!! Next time, you have a semi-auto that shoots that group,...PLEASE E-MAIL ME!!!!! I'll take it, sight unseen, if that group is repeatable. And Capt kirk, this is not an offer to buy anything, as no rifle is for sale at this point,....simply securing a sale for the future.[8D]
Best I have seen from springfields flagship is 1/2moa. Douglas barrels and rear lugged receivers. Fully bedded into the stock and nighforce glass.
I have a heep of custom 700 actioned rifles for trade if need be. Keep me in mind..................[;)]
