.243 varmint rifle
I'm in the market for a.243 to back up my 22/250 for those windy days in South Dakota. Could anyone suggest a model for long range accuracy.I probably will hand load 70-75 grain v-max bullets.Is there a model out there that I could also use for an occasional deer hunt, or am I limited to a heavy barreled target version????

I am a huge fan of my Remington 700 VLS in .243. Beautiful gun and very accurate. Alas, it is also very heavy. Here's a link to Remington's website and the 700 VLS.

NEF makes a dandy single shot! For app. $80 you can have it rebarreled in about any caliber imaginable.

i must say that i am a remington fan. the 243 is a nice gun....but the 6mm rules.
you will have little problems with wind using the 6mm loaded with 105 grain bullets. if you plan to reload the 243, and are concerned with wind, i would start the reloading process with the heaviest bullet and adjust the powder +/- until you get the accuracy you desire.0 -
Gotta go with Ohioghog on this one, get the 6mm Remington in a heavy barrel Rem700 rifle. You'll be reaching out further than you'd think possible.

Why would you shoot 70-75gr bullets from a different rifle when you can load them for your 22-250?
make the jump to a 260 or 7mm-08 and shoot a heavier bullet, say in the 100-150gr range. You will have a rifle that does "pert near" the same thing if you go 243. JMHO
Then there is always the 25-06[:D] I'll step up for GHD since he hasn't got hold of this one yet
But given the choice,....if it had to be a 6mm/243 pojectile, I would go 6mm rem for the extra powder charge. And if you are looking for long range capability, then yes...the heavy barrel is the only choice to be consistent. 700 rem heavy barrel is my choice every time. again JMHO.
Your wind bucking ability comes from long bullet length as well as weight compared to frontal mass, therefore, a 70gr 224 will buck better than a 70gr 243, because of the lesser frontal area and greater projectile length. Do a search on Balistic coefficient, and that will shed light on why a 70gr 224 does better in the wind than a 70gr 243, taking into account equal velocities.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

dustyhol has my choice listed for the gun to shoot it from, I too question the real gain you'll achieve going from a 22-250 to a .243. If you just want one, great, but I'm not sure you'll get the desired results. I used a .220 Swift for all my larger varmit stuff but if the wind got too bad for it (25mph +) then I pulled out the .300 win mag. It was overkill, but sure handled the wind better. I think any of the 30-06 cased variants (25-06, 270, etc) would be a better choice than the .243 for what you want out of it.
Again, if you want one cool. I bought one a while back for my wife to try deer hunting. It was the minimum popular caliber for deer where I hunt. It had the reduced recoil she needed...0 -
A 22-250 can do anything the 243 can. But the damage the 243 does to a prairie dog is just too cool[:D][:D][:D][:D]

jesheba you might look at the winchester mod70 coyote in .243win,i have not shot a win coyote so can not say how good they shoot. i carry a older heavy bbl mod 70 in .243win in my pickup 24/7 it is a very accurate rifle.
I reload my .243 with nos 55gr bal tips and try to push them at 4000fps
wind doesnt have time to move them very far when going that fast also recoil is very light with these so you could sit out in a dog town all day shooting these.
where in SD do you hunt? i farm and ranch in cent SD and know all about the wind deal here, FPL is going to put up 27 wind turbines about a mile from my house to generate elc!
