50 BMG info
Thinking about purchasing a 50 BMG. I can't spend over $2000. A bolt action is fine or a bolt action upper for AR-15. I don't want to screw around with dismanteling the rifle to load it. I want a fairly accurate rifle, but i'm not going to shoot match with it. What have you shot and what are your likes and dislikes??????????

Well, I have an LAR Grizzly .50bmg. It's not too bad to shoot, a bit more kick than a 12 gauge so you gotta stick on a tough scope to take the punishment. It's kind of an "odd" bolt action as I don't know if I could call it a true bolt action because to load it you flip the bolt up and the bolt slides out and you drop another cartridge in the breach and slide the bolt back in and latch it. It's more like a big heavy duty barrel with a trigger and hunk of heavy duty metal for a breach/bolt. It's heavy. Did I mention it was heavy? Oh yea and it's heavy.

I have an Ultimate Accuracy 5100 Long Range Rifle System 50 BMG and it is of the shellholder bolt style. You pull the bolt, stick a cartridge on the bolt face and then run it into the chamber. Dealer cost on these is about $2800 so I guess that is more than your really looking for. This rifle is gaurenteed to shoot 1/2 MOA at 2000 yards with the right shooter and ammo. Regrettably, I'm not that shooter.

Be careful, this is not a rifle you want to cut corners on. When something goes wrong - it goes very wrong. Biggerhammer had a graphic description of an inexpensive 50 that blew the bolt into a shooters shoulder. It resulted in a lot of damage to the shooter.
Go here http://www.fcsa.org/members.html and start contacting vendors. People have reported enjoying the rifles made by Mark Serbu, and from what I recall they're priced around what you want to spend.0 -

A 50 BMG upper is NOT
,REALLY NOT a good idea. This is way more pressure then the AR was
designed to handle. Going from a .223 to a 50 BMG?????? I dont think so. Rifles in this chambering tend to be spendy. Look for a good used rifle, they are out there. Some paople buy them expecting to be able to shoot them a day long. The recoil level varies from gun to gun and with different types of ammo. I have over 3 grand in a Maadi-Griffin I built and I won't even go into my M-82A1. The 50BMG is a mamoth cartridge that developes staggering pressure. It is NOT a chambering to cut corners on. In a sub-standard rifle it can be quite dangerous.
If something goes bad, it can be devastating. Stick with established makers. These are great rifles to shoot, They bring new meaning to the term long distance.0 -

Try Serbu firearms, i beleive the website is www.serbu.com. The rifles are in your price range i believe and are pretty accurate. As python noted, the .50 BMG upper on an AR isnt the best of ideas. It also creates excessive wear on your AR lower. Get yourself an inexpensive single shot and youll be happy you did. Good luck! 0
