Will tracer ammo hurt my barrel?

Was thinking about buying some...just wondering if it would damage the inside of my barrel...(chrome lined ak barrel)?

  Hi and welcome.I don`t think it will hurt your barrel but you should clean it right after shooting it, also check the laws on what type of ammo you can shoot at your range,you don`t want the owner getting mad at you for not asking,and possibly asking you to leave and not come back, if you shoot them you "must" make sure and I stress this that you do not have any thing that can catch fire were you are going to shoot them they are a very high temp. burning sulfur..so be safe and shoot smart...[8D]

  ranger's reply is spot on, but wish to add one thing - in some jurisdictions it is *illegal* to shoot tracers. So you'd better check that out first.

  The comments regarding legality and/or acceptability are valid; however there is no mechanical/chemical problem since the tracer does not ignite until the projectile has traveled 50-150 yds.

  Thanks all for the info...it's appreciated!! I live in one of the free states (IN) where "most" stuff is legal...I think that the only thing Indiana really frowns upon is steel core or ap handgun ammo...so no problemo with tracers...also, I have my own land to shoot on free from fire hazards and a nice earthen back drop to shoot into...thanks for the info again!!

  We found our rifles were easer to clean if we ran a few hardball rounds through the barrel after firing tracers. If we did not do that, the barrels were a b!cth to clean.

  As Kissgoodnight's comment suggests..the rounds DO ignite in the barrel. They just do not get really 'fired up' and burning real bright until a couple nanoseconds later. After a few rounds you Will get some residue in your barrel (I forget what the compound is). A couple ball rounds will help 'scrape' it clean.
  
  DO HEED THAT WARNING OF FIRE!!! If you shoot into a stop/bank and a round would richocet out...you may be fighting a fire. If it is Grandpa's fields near his home you may have a real problem REAL fast.

  It may not apply to you but US .30 caliber ammunition (30-06 & 7.62x51) have two types of tracer bullets.
  
  A red tip on the bullet indicates that the tracer element lights as soon as the round is fired.
  
  Bullets with an orange tip, on the other hand, do not ignite until apx 25 to 50 yards from the muzzle. This is done to help conceal the location from which they were fired.
