America's finest Handgun - More targeted
I asked yesterday about what is the finest american made non-1911 handgun, I should have been a bit clearer on what the criteria are whoops [:p].
My sister's B-friend wants to know what the finest American made double action, semi-automatic, pistol. A pistol in the general class of a HK USP or SIG 2XX series. A reliable well engeneerred "service" pistol to be used to defend one's self and home. Whew!
Sorry I wasn't more clear last time, seemed clear in my head[:)].
P.S. Didn't mean to rattle any 1911'ers, I love 'em but not what were looking for... this time[;)]

You seem to have confused "service" with "finest".
As most aficionados of the 1911 may have let you know; the 1911 design is pretty much as good as it gets.
Sure, there are other makers; but they all produce something very much like the 1911.
Take the STI or Kimber or Coonan or any of the other race gun frames and make something other than a 1911 if you can, or be more specific (again) in your criterion: Finest (meaning well-made, ornate, most expensive) or Service (meaning reliable, well-made, accurate, flawless function) can mean many things to many shooters.
Just to let you know my opinion of the "best" semiauto made in the US of A; take a look at the Ruger P90 or the S&W "Tactical" series- reliable, accurate enough for a street fight, in adequate calibers to do damage, and can be had for less than a Korth, SigArms, Browning, Beretta, Walther, etc.
For more posts on this subject, define what its' intended use will be.

Surprise! America's finest non-1911 handgun is not a double action semi-automatic pistol at all. It is a double action Smith & Wesson Model 66 .357 revolver. Should I add IMOH

If you are considering a service-type pistol of double action persuasion, you can do much worse than a Sig. I have a P229 in .40 S&W with a .357 Sig barrel on the side. My PD issues Sigs, either the 226 or 229. They WORK. Every time.

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY! My, a lot of time was wasted on this topic going down the wrong path.
There are few traditional double action service pistols made in the United States. Smith & Wesson and Ruger are truly American, while Beretta also builds service pistols here. Kel-Tec and Kahr are double-action-only and I understand that is not what you are seeking. (If that is incorrect, jump in now so as to head off more wasted posts.)
I prefer the Smith & Wesson designs over the Rugers. The magazine safety is particularly desirable for a house gun. The Tactical Smiths are outstanding guns, and would be my choice of the three brands.0 -
What you got against the 1911, hmm? What else can be chambered for the 460 Rowland and have a .22 conversion unit, and group 2" or better at 50 yds, hmm? 0
