  There are civilian versions of the M16. The civilian versions leave off the flash hider, bayonet lug, & full auto fire capability.
  
  Here is a good example. I would recommend a full size gun, since that is what he will be shooting in the Marines.

  AR-15 and clones are available for resonable prices almost everywhere except the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. I, unfortunatly, sold mine a few years ago. Now I connot get another as they are "Assult Weapons" here.
  Check the numerous ads in SGN.

  The AR-15 is a civvie-spec M-16. If you want to get one look at the Bushmaster. They are a mil-spec AR and will help him get used to the rifle. They will teach him plenty about shooting the M-16 in training, but if he wants to get a head start on getting familiar with shooting and cleaning (and cleaning, and cleaning) the AR then by all means buy one.[;)]

  I'd follow the advice from joey & william.
  
  When I went to Army basic training in 1964, I'd never even SEEN an M14. By the time they'd finished training me, I had no problem firing "expert" in qualification.
  
  If your son has training & experience with guns - any guns - he should do fine.
