Can a semi-auto be silenced?
I was thinking of getting a 10-22 with a silencer. Before I begin the ATF process, I was wondering if a semi auto can be silenced. It is a lot of money just to shoot a quiet gun, but I think it would be more fun.

I have a Gemtech that I use on Walther P22 as well as a semi rifle. They are quiet but not as quiet as a bolt action piece. You can hear the semi action function. Still, it's a huge difference than no silencer at all!

Yes, Semi-auto is easily suppressed but not as quiet as a bolt action unless you have a slide/bolt locking mechanism to prevent a cycling of the action.
10/22= $200
Good suppressor= $400
BATF stamp= $200
I won't argue that a suppressed .22 isn't a fun little item but
remember that in addition to that $600, a lot of paperwork, fingerprinting, explaining to your local LEO WHY?, you're also giving big brother a free warrant into your personal life anytime they choose.
If your pockets are deep, your past/future is/will be clean, and you really desire a semi-auto supressed maybe you should. If you're just wanting to discreetly rid yourself of the occasional small rodent quietly, consider a $75 bolt action .22 and a $3.00 box of Aquila Colibri ammo.

before you spend a lot of money try a box of sub-sonic long rifle ammo. if it will cycle the action of your rifle. i think you will be surprised at how little noise it makes[8D] 0 -
I tried the 60 gr Aquila, and even in a .22 Conversion unit in an AR (which ALSO soaks up some of the .22's powder gases) it was a long ways from being as quiet as a good suppressor makes a .22 auto rifle. Of course, if you use regular "high speed" lr ammo thru the suppressor, it will still manifest supersonic "crack" as the bullet breaks the sound-barrier. $500 is a lot of money to have a suppressor made and mounted,on top of the cost of a $100, used .22 rifle,and before adding the $200 Fed tax. I suggest that you make your own, using the book on the subject, sold by Paladin Press. It takes only a few hours, so the $200 tax is virtually your only cost. 0 -
The short answer is YES, even full auto can be silenced.
