Correct. They are the same exact round. they made the .223 the nato round many years ago.

Where does the 5.45x39 fit into the mix?

5.45x39 is a newer Soviet cartridge which is the 7.62x39 necked down to a 5.45mm projectile. Basically Russia's answer to the .223

NOT, if all it was is necked down, why do the bolts not interchange between the two calibers?
The 5.45x39.5mm cartridge is a completely different round altogether, they just kept the length around 39mm so they didn't have to totally design a new rifle, they already had the most reliable rifle ever made. Saying what you said is the same as saying the 223 is a 308 necked down to 5.56 and trimmed to 45mm. Not even close.

Incorrect or mis-information will get someone hurt or killed.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE 5.45X39 AND 7.62X39 ARE DIFFERENT CARTRIDGES. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIRE 5.45X39 AMMO IN A GUN CHAMBERED FOR 7.62X39 OR VICE VERSA. ALSO, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIRE 223 AMMO IN A WEAPON CHAMBERED FOR 308 OR VICE VERSA. APPARENTLY SOME SIMPLETONS HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE THE BOLT IN THEIR 7.62 AK RIFLES TO ALLOW SHOOTING THE 5.45 CARTRIDGE. DON'T DO IT, A BARREL ALSO IN 5.45 CALIBER IS ALSO REQUIRED TO DO THIS (AS WELL AS MAGWELL AND FEEDING MODIFICATIONS AS WELL).[:D][:D][:D]

OK, the 5.45 is based on the 7.62x39 cartridge, the Soviets went to a smaller projectile which would improve accuracy and reduce the recoil in full automatic fire. The length and basic size was retained to allow the AK, AKS, and Krinkov platforms to be made in the new caliber with little retooling. Did that explain everything thoroughly enough?

    KJ:
If'n a guy doesn't even know what caliber his rifle is designed for, you can't rule anything out.
The point I was trying to make is this: lately the 74s are scarce, if someone thinks that the only diff between the 47 and 74 is a bbl, they may be tempted to pick up one here on GB to convert. I figure you were in a hurry to get to the party and left out what most would consider to be common sense, but that assumption seems to be getting more and more dangerous these days with the questions being asked.
I meant nothing toward you personally, but if it saves someones face from being messed up, it was worth it. With the tone of your previous posts here and on the GD board I KNOW that safety is a major concern to you.

I read that rounds labeled 5.56mm have thicker casings than those labeled .223. I'm assuming they are thicker for hotter military loads. Is this true?

My apologies, sort of, to kingjoey and REBJr. I'm a newbie to this forum and I maybe got this 5.45 x 39 thing started. I ran into some ads for 5.45 x 39 ammo and AK74 ads for same cartridge a couple years ago. Ammo turns up reasonable so I got to wonderin' about a bolt gun that might be cheap to shoot vermin. I thought this might be a poor man's .22PPC (which I believe to be based on 7.62 x 39 case).

I thought it must be just necked down til I talked to an owner of said critter. He sold me a box of ammo. They aren't even REMOTELY
related to either .223 or 7.62 x 39 cases. It is somewhat similiar
in cartridge size and ballistics of the old .222 Remington. Still a decent cartridge. Head is similiar but body taper different, steel case, length different, ect.

I think some of this bad confusion is there are now some AK's being imported that ARE chambered .223, even some in .308.

As you said BE SURE of the chamber in the gun before you slide the action home on a round.

    Here is a good faq.

    http://www.ammo-oracle.com/

    This one is my favorite!!![:D]

    Q. I'm concerned about roving packs of zombies driving automobiles after the end of the world as we know it. Since, as everyone knows, you have to make headshots to kill zombies, what ammo should I be using to defeat zombies in automobies?

Without commenting on the wisdom of engaging roving packs of zombies without adult supervision, the best performing rounds, in terms of penetration, in 6mm laminated front windscreen auto glass and other automobile structures are probably the Federal Tactical 55 and 62 grain bonded JSP (LE223T1 and LE223T3).

Be aware, however, that these rounds, topped with the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet, are designed for penetration and generally do NOT fragment in CQB circumstances.

5.45mm is the metric diameter of the bullet or is it case mouth?
39mm I know is the lenght of the case.

    GreenLantern,

I find Turn Undead or Greater Turning works pretty good on zombies, though depends on the level of your cleric.

You will find some manufacturers actually have their boxes of ammo marked with both the "5.56mm" and ".223 caliber" designations at the same time. That would indicate that they are exactly the same.
