2400 powder

A long time ago I was advised that it is necessary to use Magnum primers when loading 2400. Being new to the game, I have always done just that. However recently I have been told that it is not necessary. How about some comments from those with experience. Thanks.

  Well, since 2400 has been around since the 30's I think and they didn't have magnum primers and it worked fine then. I'd say what you heard is bunk. I use in in 44 mag loads and 1/2 oz skeet loads in .410 and it does just fine. It's not a ball powder like 296 which does benefit from hotter ignition. I'm no reloding genius but haven't blown anything up in 38 years.

  I don't know if it is necessary, but I have used magnum primers in 44 magnum for years with 2400. I use Winchester large pistol primers generally which are now rated for standard and magnum use. I use to use CCI magnum primers, but with the Winchester I only have one type to keep on hand.

  I've been loading 2400 in the .357 mag and with cast bullets in small capacity rifle cartridges. I have never used a magnum primer. I've never had a problem with ignition.

  I'm fairly new to 2400 powder but have recently started using it for cast bullets in rifles. 15gr of 2400, which is fairly mild, with a 200gr. bullet in a 30/40 Krag showed perfect ignition and was quite accurate.

  I used to use 2400 when reloading my 45 ACP, but switched to WW231 because I found it to be cleaner. I have never used magnum primers in any loads for 38/357, 44, or 45. Actually, I use 231 for all of them.

  I've shot a heck of a lot of 2400 and I don't recall ever using magnum primers; it does just fine with a standard primer in .44 Mag.

  I stoped useing 2400 years ago, Dirty Powder, I use 231 in my revolvers, I use clays in my 45 acp very clean and I load 12ga shot shells for Trap shooting with clays. $92.00 per #8 At todays prices that's cheap.

  You will want to adjust your charge if you are switch between magnum and regular primers. My understanding is that the only possible reason for a magnum primer is for use when the ammo is out in the real cold for a very long time with slow burning powders.

  I've used 2400 in .44 and .41 magnum loads with standard and magnum primers.
  
  The most noticable differance I've observed is the reduced amount of un and partially burned powder residue when using the magnum primers.
  
  I can only assume that the magnum primers do a better job of igniting the powder charge but without a chronograph to verify the results it is just conjecture.
