I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with this cartidge, especially in a bolt rifle. I know they were used in the AK74 and a extremely limited number of bolt rifles made it here before the Clinton import ban.

I would like also to know if there are any barrel makers capable of
making a barrel with this odd bore size.

  I can't speak for a bolt action rifle but in an actual AK-74 they are rather unimpressive. I didn't find the ballistic performance (accuracy and velocity) to be on par with the (5.56nato).223 rem. Although the accuracy (or lack thereof) I would attribute to the AK-74 so I don't know if I would count that against the ammunition.

  Shotgun News had an interesting article concerning this cartridge a few months ago. I think it might be in their yearly best of guide. Anyways they said the benefit of this cartridge was that it spawled at one inch whereas the .223 took 2 to 3 inches to spawl (flip end over end) once it hit flesh. The benefit being better stopping power instead of overpenetration. The artical went into that one inch spawl is ideal when dealing with skinny people such as the somalians (insert Clinton Black Hawk Down reference here). Rounds that took more time to flip usually exited thir victims before flipping leaving small exit wounds.
  
  From what I hear this ammo is much cheaper on the surplus market than the the .223.

  I had a Romanian AK-74 when they first hit this country, I also had imported some military ammo from Russia and found it to be pretty good, I also got the balistics on it, MV with a 54 gr bullet was 2,950 FT per second, and the the FT/LBS was 1,049 at a 100 yeards.
  the .223 with a 55GR bullet has a MV of 3,250 FT per second and the FT/LBS was 1,250 at 100 yards, I came across a small lot of 48GR FMJ ammo and did the ballistics on that round(also imported from Russia) and it was MV 3950 FT per second and it was 1,350 FT/LBS at a 100 yards it offered a pretty good group at 100 yard I had a scope on my AK-74 and got a 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inch group....[8D]

  I found an mil. vet. who has an east german sniper rifle that was before one of the "world saving" bans. He claims it shhots very well.
  
  Thanks for the info on the ak74. Considering that there is a whole lot of activity going on when they go off and they are military pieces
  (off the rack but dependable as sunup), 1 1/2 to 2" isn't too bad.
  The ammo cost plus that they just started importing it in softpoint
  sounded like a relatively inexpensive/accurate project.
