Brass Disk in stock of Swede Mauser
I just picked up a Swedish M38 Mauser Cavalry Rifle in 6.5x55 and I'm wondering iff the brass (?) disk in the buttstock contains some sort of information about the rifle?

Thanks! That's what I needed! Now for the next question -- "The pie-shape with 1-2-3 refers to the amount of -rust- observed in the bore" -- my disc is marked with a "3", but the bore looks great, I am not able to see any rust and patches dampened with Hoppes come through clean. The rifling is very strong and the gun looks almost unused. All parts match, including the stock, and are not forced matches. Is it common for the naked eye not to be able to see this?

I beg to differ with the Dutchman. I have always read that the 1,2, or3 referred to the amount of bore wear. The Swedes didn't tolerate any rust in their bores, but the bore would wear out.
The Swedes I have heard of with the "3" marking still shoot great. The Swedes had very high standards.
How long is the barrel of your rifle?0 -
I agree with Allen, believe their's a translation problem here. Always was led to believe, that the numbers on the discs referred to bore wear.
The Dutchman has a excellent site full of first rate information! Hate to think what kind of grammatical errors I would make if I tried to create a site in a language other then english.0 -

The barrel is approx. 23.5" in length. I can't wait to shoot it! I wish I knew a way to take a picture of the rifling in the bore -- it certainly looks like it has a lot of life left in it.
