Opinion of BOSS SYSTEM

    May I ask what is a BOSS recoil reduction system.
    I've shot what I thought was the only BOSS system on several rifles, but they were just for accurizing or dialing in, for a lack of a better word. I didn't realize they made a recoil reduction system.
    But then again I'm not into that sort of thing so I don't keep up with it. I personally think it's all hype. Now by all means that's just my opinion, they could be the greatest things on earth.

    With my luck I'd like them then I'd have to have one on all my rifles.

    I have the boss system on two of my rifles and overall I think it's a good thing.........I don't use the ported one because it's soooo loud. I do however use the CR to tune in my reloads. Even if you don't shoot reloads, the CR (solid boss) will assist you in tuning in your loads. The manual supplied with the boss has the recommended settings for most popular factory loads also. The only real negative I've realized from the boss is the loudness experienced with the ported boss, thus I use the CR......The CR and the ported boss perform the same task, it's just that the ported boss reduces recoil and is much louder, and the CR doesn't perform recoil reduction, but is much easier on the ears. If you're hunting with the gun, I'd suggest the CR...........If you're benchrest shooting, I'd suggest the ported boss because you'll more than likely be using ear protection at the range anyway, and the recoil reduction is nice for constant shooting.

    Dont know how they work, but, in my opinion, they are ugly as sin. Look like a lawn mower muffler on the end of your barrel. Wouldn't have one of them on any of my rifles.

    WOODY IS RIGHT ON.....GOOD RECOIL REDUCTION, HOWEVER, WEAR YOUR EAR MUFFLERS. IF YOUR SHOOTING SIDE BY SIDE WITH SOMEONE, ONE WAY TO PISS'EM OFF IS TO LET ONE FLY.

    The best thing since sliced bread. On your larger calibers the ported boss or one of the clones will tame your recoil and turn your factory rifle into a tack driver. I put one on a Ruger 77 with the skeleton stock in .338 win mag it went from a basket ball group at 100 yds. to a dime sized group at 200 yds. as for the noise I always where ear protection at the range. I would not own a sporter type rifle without one.

    valkyrie.rider, I like most appreciate the opinions given here on the board. I don't mean to be negative towards you, but I really don't know too many people that are worried about how their rifle "looks" when trying to accomplish group size or kills. My advice to you with "looks" would be to apply that to your women and your cars, and don't worry about it when it comes to making a gun perform..........the best lookin' gun doesn't necessarily mean it'll perform.........I'm not even defending the boss system here, it's just my opinion that you should not possibly sway someone's opinion of how something works based on the way "you" think it looks, and you even admit that you don't know anything about the boss, well if that's the case................please do us all a favor and don't answer those topics you know nothing about.

    American Shooter had a rerun of the contest Browning had for Boss rifles.

    If you don't like the looks of the BOSS, another alternative is to shoot groups with your rifle and cut the barrel back 1/2" at a time until you get what you feel is the tightest group possilbe.

    The offside to this is you can cut too far back and you can only tune your rifle for one load.

    I use one on my .30-06. Noisy to everyone else on the range, expecially those on the benches immediately right & left to me. Not too bad to me as the shooter since the sound waves move in a cone shape around me. We all wear ear protection so what....

    I can dial in the commercial loads for greater accuracy. It tightens those groupings really well.

    Also saves my shoulder. Kicks like a .270 rather than the .30-06 it is!

    I know of 2 friends who had them on their 280 rifles and both took them off due to the noise. It would be fine on target rifles but if you hunt with others I would pass on it just for the other hunters sake.
