which .223 for coyote??

My dad wants a coyote gun for the ranch. Shots may be long or may be short. To get the longer ones he needs a pretty accurate rig. Doesn't have a lot of dough to put into a varmint gun. He was looking at some Savage bolt actions. (likes .223 for the velocity and cheap ammo) Any suggestions on make of rifle, and ammo that's inexpensive, but accurate enough for a 100 to 200 yd. shot on coyote??
ps I like .243 because the right one could be a good deer rifle and get the coyotes too, but he wants a .223.

  Savage has a long standing reputation for great accuracy in an economical, if plain, package. A Savage bolt action would be a great choice. Be sure you get this years model with accutrigger so you can a just pull weight.

  Whatever you get, you should try feeding it some winchester premium 64gr power points. Just try it and tell us what you think, I think you'll like its performance.

  You may want to look at the New England Firearms handi rifle. I bought one for 185 dollars and it shoots 3 shot cloverleafs. It is single shot, but with that kind of accuracy, you don't need follow up shots! I use Winchester USA 45 gr hollowpoints which sell for about 12 dollars a box of 40. Cheap gun, cheap ammo, but it shoots great and has killed many groundhogs and yes even a couple of deer!

  Dantheman has a good point. Also you can have additional barrels of different calibers installed on the reciver for less than the price of a new gun.

  Ruger makes the 77 and the mini 14, both fine rifles for varmit shooting. Go do a search on GB for thse two.

  12 dollars a box of 40 = cheap ammo??? ... OMG! Thats 30 cents a round! I re-load match grade ammo (consistant sub-MOA) on my Dillon for 10 cents a round, shoot average 2000+ rounds a year ... that saves me over $400 a year on my .223 ammo alone!

  I keep hearing about the NEF Handi. I've never shot one. I keep thinking "if it sounds too good to be true...."
  
  he's mainly interested in commercial ammo. he barely gets time to do the really important and necessary for life stuff like hunt deer and hogs, so i doubt he can afford the time to reload.
  
  anybody out there have a bad experience with the NEF Handi???

  4th on the NEF Handi-rifle. A friend of mine was in the same boat. He got the HR and scope for under $300 (cheap scope). It is a single shot break open that even with its low price, is accurate. It is a good place to start. If you are only in the market for a bolt action, then the Savage is about the best for the money and real accurate out of the box. The Mini 14 is a great semi auto, but then you are getting up into the $500(new)price range.

  jamesgray, your da is looking for a utility rifle that he won't worry about scratching. You're right about the .243, but he doesn't need a deer rifle. However, the NEF Handi rifle comes in .243, same money for much more utility. $218.18US. (http://www.thegunsource.com/rifles/newenglandfirearms.htm) Sell him on it by saying things like multi-purpose, military ball isn't accurate enough, you'll spring for the reloading rig(if you can. Think a Lee Loader, a scale, a manual and you can and the money you'll get from the hides. No varmint bullets. FMJ's only. Properly prepared coyote hides are worth money.) And you can put meat on the table. Don't know if it'll work, but it can't hurt. Ask here for .243 FMJ loads.
