Age of a Browning shotgun
Any one know how to tell the age of a browning by the S.# if so please let me know. Thank you and have a nice day.[:D]

baba, in the middle of most brownings there are two letters that indicate when it was made, just so happens I don't have my reference with me right now, I'll check this post later and if you don't have it, I'll post it 0 -
What I meant to say was in the middle of the serial number there is two letters.. And also welcome to the forum, I haven't had the oppurtunity to speak with you yet. 0 -
Baba, Welcome to the forum. Browning has used several varying and often mysterious schemes re the serial number "system". If you'll post your gun's description (the protocol varies for A5, BSS, O/U, etc)and the entire s/n including alpha characters - use xxx in place of last three numerals - I or someone else here can probably get you within a year or two of your gun's date of manufacture. One other comment...
The age of a gun is almost insignificant unless pre-1899. Condition and quality are the limiting factors.
As an example, the A-5 series is broadly seen in three categories. One is the pre-war series with the safety mounted just ahead of the trigger. Then there comes the "classic" A-5 with the safety at the rear of the trigger, but still made in Belgium. In the last category is the Japanese A-5. A nice gun in every way, but not regarded as highly as the Belgian guns.
The same factors hold true with any of the really nice Browning guns. Age will have little meaning for a nice Superposed. Same is true for a Citori... A nice gun, but never held in the same regard as its Belgian siblings.
If it makes you feel better to know that your gun was made in 1938, or maybe 1966, or any other date... Great! It just doesn't matter much to the rest of the world.

The S4 in the serial # indicates that the gun was produced in 1964-

Baba, Dave nailed it. Take a look at www.browning.com Click on "Browning Northamerica". At the top of the next page click "Services". The 5th item there is "Date Your Gun" - click on that and you will see where your o/u lies in the scheme. Best, Jim

Thanks guys, now it any one knows how to date Perazzi I would sure like that info. My Beretta's I found the code for but Perazzi nothing.

baba, I didn't look at the site in its entirety but you might slip over to www.perazzi.com and ask them. Your shotgun may be an Ithaca or Winchester import but I would think Perazzi could get you pretty close. The 21st Blue Book separates s/n's as follows:
Type 1 - 30,000 - 33,250
Type 2 - 33,251 - 35,450
Type 3 - 35,451 - 51,242
Type 4 - 51,243 thru current
