Any way to improve accuracy in AR15?
A customer is getting a group spread of about six inches at 100 yards with a Colt Match Target HBAR. I realize it could be the ammo he is shooting but are there any things I should check other than the usual, sights, crown, etc. which might be causing his problem? He is an experiened rifle shot.
Are there any sites which might give me some ideas?
Thanks for any help.

first things, i'd check are the barrel (clean, not copper fouled) trigger (factory 6-8 lbs just don't get it), ammo (good commercial, not mil. srup.) 0 -
Had the same problem with a gun show barrel, on my Colt AR. Talked to
a gun smith student at the range and he said find someone with a
throat erosion gauge. I bought one from brownells and he was right,
the barrel was "shot out" I won't even think about buying an upper
without this gauge. Good luck.0 -
I would check the ammo first and clean the bore. 55 gr. will not shoot as well as the 62 gr and up in my MT. I have easily shot quarter size groups at 200 yd. 0 -
Had a flat top colt that did the same thing that's a colt for you. saved the preban lower and had a match upper built had the origional colt upper converted to one of those knerled free float tubes haven't shot the freefloat much but group size did drop to about 1 1/2" @ 100 without any load tweaking. Colt barrels are just for looks. If he wants a shooter trade it for a bushmaster. 0 -
If the gas tube is binding on the bolt carrier, it will cause groups to open up. A bent tube or barrel nut not correctly lined up will cause this. Take the bolt out of the bolt carrier and install the carrier back into the rifle. Cycle the action slowly, and if this is the problem, you will feel it rubbing. 0 -
Is he trying to use heavy bullets in a slow-twist rifling? Is the barrel bent, dented, out of spec in any way? Is the flashhider not straight with the bore? 0
