Ballistic Gelatin

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on some Ballistic gelatin???
I've looked all over the internet and all I can find is articles about using it for ballistic tests. Thanks!

    I think Rick Jamison of SHOOTING TIMES magazine had some
    articles on this,including where to purchase,be warned,
    this stuff is right expensive.The gellatin comes in various
    percentages- 10% or 20% etc.Hope this helps,I can't find the

    I will have to dig up some stuff I have from some FBI protocol Ballistic tests we did. From what I remember, the gelatin is made from commercial food grade Knox Gelatin, and the recipies vary to get your 10% or whatever mix. The cost comes in when you figure you need so much gelatin mix to make a big enough block to contain the round you are testing. You also need a long rectangular container to make it in, and enough 'fridge space to set it up in. You calibrate it with a pump BB gun set to a certain FPS, the BB is only supposed to penetrate (I think) 3". I also believe the gelatin is supposed to be shot at 45 degrees. A lot of work to shoot jelly, unless you are really doing a test. Preferrably paid by somebody else. Bottom line, you buy the gelatin mix and make it, I don't know of a source to buy it prepared. If there is an interest, I will post the recipie I have.

    I don't know how wed to jell. you are but for the last couple of years I'v been useing modeling clay. You can get it at school supply stores for 4.99 a 5 lb. block. Get as many as you need and can be used over and over, wrap in plastic wrap for storage and to keep soft.Be carefull when digging out jacketed bullits I cut my finger bad and it got infected.

    Here is the recipie - the only thing is that it calls for "Kind and Knox 250A Ordnance Gelatin Powder", I don't know if that was used. Anyway...

    1. Use tap water (130 degrees +/- 20)
    2. Always add powder to water, 1 kg gelatin powder to 9000 ML water.
    3. Add 3 drops cinnamon oil to prevent foaming.
    4. Strain mix through cheesecloth.
    5. Use spray mold release on molds, pour mix into molds.
    6. Let stand 4 hours at room temp to hydrate.
    7. Put molds in refrigerator at 40 degrees for 48 hours before use.

    Block Calibration

    A .177 BB fired at 590 +/-20 fps with blocks set at 10' from muzzle will penetrate 3.5" to 4.25" if done right.

    These links has everything and then some about Ballistic gelatin, but for what it's worth, GHS' recipe looks right on target. The second link has a cheaper source for the gelatin than Knox.

    10% Jello is said to simulate hog muscle. Since there is very little muscle on or in the chest, there's no reason to think very highly of Jello as a simulant of what happens when bullets impact chest organs.

    Utah, and its Mormon housewives, pride themselves on being the Jell-O capitol of the nation.
    No fooling. Jell-O is a cultural thing in Utah. I haven't checked, but I suspect I can buy tubs of gelatin in grocery stores that sell the larger amounts.
    Heck, I can buy a 5-gallon bucket of mashed potato mix if I want. Jell-O or regular gelatin in large amounts shouldn't be a problem in this state.
