How do you get a Class III license?
I was just curious, how does someone get a Class III license? What's involved? I guess you have to be a FFL first? Thanks for the info!

A Class III license is just one small part of being in the firearms business; it is not a way for casual shooters to buy their expensive toys by mail-order.
Most Class III dealers basically sell regular firearms, and also sell Class III firearms to supplement that business. You must proceed just as you would in setting up any other business enterprise: You need a business plan, financing, business premises, zoning, FEIN, state tax # & permits, and a security system that includes a safe. Considering that the cheapest Class III weapon out there is $1,000, with many in the $5,000-10,000 range, you must be prepared to invest a lot of money just to get started.

Well, that depends.
What kind of gun do you want to buy, where is it located, and do you have a C&R? In most cases you will probably need to locate a Class III dealer within your state, and process everything through him. He will give you the forms to complete, tell you any local laws that apply, and guide you through the process.
It's possible to do this on your own, but only if you have located a weapon within your own state, or the weapon is a C&R Class III and you have a C&R license.

I guess I didn't even think it was possible for a civilian to buy or own a Class III gun. I thought you could only be a dealer, law enforcement, etc. Can an individual buy a Class III gun from a dealer? Do you just have to pay an additional fee and fill out some forms? I always thought it would be neat to own an MP5 if I could find one for the right price. Thanks for your help!

I have good news and ad news. The good news: yes, fed. law permits ownership of class 3 weapons to civilians. State or local laws should be checked though. In scenic central IN they are legal. Weapons are purchased as nmyers said. He also brought up something that I hadn't considered - the C&R class 3. Yes, there are additional papers, supplied by your dealer, and after a trip to the local LE to get fingerprinted, you pay a one time $200. (per weapon). The dealer will send the papers in. Expect to wait months to get approval.
The bad news: There are no "right prices"! A MP5 probably costs as much as my first house. Ruger AC-556 and Cobrays are all I can afford.

The "right price" for one man is a bargan for the second and outragous to a third. Nearly all HK MP-5 submachineguns you'll come across are converted HK-94 semi auto's (or even SP-89 pistols). These conversions were done prior to the cut off date in 1986. You can expect to pay around $8000 and up for a decent example- more if it is a registered receiver gun (not a registered sear conversion) and uses HK parts throughout. There are a handful of original HK MP-5 submachineguns in private hands. These guns had to have been imported prior to late 1968 and very few were brought in at that time. You can expect to pay around $15,000 for such a gun...if one were to surface for sale. Are these the "right" prices for your budget? They don't fit into mine and I usually don't care what I pay for a gun I want.

Wow, I didn't realize MP5's were that expensive. I can't afford that. I just didn't even realize there was any way a civilian could own one. I thought you had to be law enforcement or a dealer.

Take a surf to the NRA's site and look for Class III. There's a link to a page that tells you what State allows what. It's daft, but some allow FA but no sound suppressors, some suppressors but no FA, some both and some neither. So the fabled "it depends" starts with where you are. The first thing you need to do is learn what laws your State has. You may have to pack up and move. 0
