BINOCULARS WW II ??????
[:)]I have ask this question almost everywhere, 'mite as well ask it here. My uncle gave me the binoculars he had with him when he was on the Yorktown in WWII. He's not here any more to tell me what the printing on them stands for, so here goes. The writing says: U.S. NAVY B.U. SHIPS MARK I MODEL I (circle with N in it) 11791 1941 BAUSCH & LOMB OPT. Co. Rochester N.Y. U.S.A.
WHAT does the B.U. stand for ??????? B and L wo'nt tell me! HELPPPPP[?][?] PS:The glasses are in good shape, just some sea water stains.

Hi and how are you...I think the B.U. stands for Battle Unit....but don`t hold me to it..I talked to a few people and thats what they said...(old Navy Boys)

Stands for "Bureau of Ships". Spoken like one word as Bew-ships. Bausch & Lomb screwed up putting the period after the B. Should read BU. SHIPS. From an former AO1 (NAC) USN

I asked my dad, a WW11 Naval Officer Vet-had no idea.
The actual B.U. is not known to him. The stamping that he recalls on the optics were : Baush and Lomb-Rochester, New York. All seven power
Did say that the one he used was not marked-B.U.
The "Bureau of ships " was marked-BU SHPS.
I believe him. Also damn proud of my Father.

Skyking got it. Should be BU SHIPS for Bureau of Ships.
Your B&L Mk. I are standard issue 7x50 ship's binoculars.

Believe it or not, my last issued pair in '91 were good ole Bausch & Lomb 10 X 50 ARMOURED binocs. Super bright, a full moom is just like daylight on the open ocean. They are no longer identified with any Navy markings. 0 -
I don't know what it means but mine says "BU.SHIPS".
