1863 Savage Arms Carbine???
I have a U.S. marked 1863 Savage Arms Co. .58 cal. Civil War carbine. All of the information that I have been able to gather tells me that, while Savage did supply the U.S. Government with muskets, I find no mention of carbines. If this weapon has been cut down from a musket, it is an excellent job. The gun is in very good to excellent condition. How can I tell if it has been cut down? What would be the approximate value?

Also some information would be of immence help..Barrel length, Sights and where placed, Stock Length, Overall length, Brass Furniture or Iron....Marks and Letters and where Placed. Sling Rings, Tapered Barrel or Straight Barrel, Ram Rod, Need a complete and total discription of the Lock Plate, and where the Names and Numbers and all other Marks are Located...best......almost forgot...How Many Barrel Bands are on this Gun...?

It may be well worth the effort to really identify it because if it is an original Savage CW carbine it will be worth serious money. Captkirk is right, a lot more info is needed, including conditon. 0 -
You might check this one for any other markings. Arthur Savage introduced his first proto type to the U.S. Military in 1890 which had
a revolving magazine. The Savage Arms Company history is from 1897 thru 1917 it then changed to Savage Arms Corp to present time. The complete History of Savage Arms book shows no listing of what you are describing. It may also been a commemorative type that they might have made. Hope this may help.0 -
O.K. Guys; here goes; I,m trying to answer all of Captkirk's questions.
Barrel length is 27 5/8", nicely crowned.
Rear sight, 2 3/4" forward of the joint where the barrel meets the upper tang. Rear sight is a flip-up type, 1.32" long, .665 wide, .500 high. Has 3 blades that work like a Winchester express sight only larger. The lowest sight has no markings, the mid-height sight is stamped 3, the tallest sight is stamped 5. The sight has a half circle cut with a very fine square notch in the bottom of the half circle. The front sight consists of a slotted base with a blade in the slot and soldered or brased to the barrel. The base is .432" long, .553" wide (at the widest point, it is slightly tapered), and .320" high (height above the barrel). The stock is 29 1/2" long from the toe to the forward end. Overall length is 44" from toe to muzzel. On the bottom of the stock, 1" aft of the lower tag is a stamp in the wood. It is an oval with a fancy "P" in the center. On the lock plate, 3/8" behind the hammer is stamped 1863. Just forward of the hammer is an American Eagle with 5 arrows and an olive branch. Arrows to the rear and olive branch forward. Under the eagle is U.S. There is a similar eagle stamped on a flat circle below and ahead of the cap nipple. On the forward part of the lock plate is stamped in two lines:

The barrel is slightly tapered, .832" at the muzzel and .908 where the stock starts, (a distance of 14 1/4"). I didn't take the stock off, so I don't know the size of the barrel at the breech. On the top of the butt plate, just ahead of the retaining screw, is stamped U S. On the top of the barrel, on a flat about 2" long are what I think are proof marks. There is a "V" a "P" and a thing that looks like an eagle head and part of its neck. There is one barrel band, held to the rear by the stock notch and in the front by a spring loaded blade imbeded in the stock.

I think 101AIRBORNE has made the correct call...I can't find anything in the database or in My Libruary mentioning anything about a Carbine.
I believe at this juncture, You have a Gunsmith made cut down Musket.....I could very well be wrong...but hav'nt anything further to add after researching My Files and Records.....
