S&W N-Frame Grips
I shot the model 29 44 magnum and found out what recoil was. Need advise on the best grip for reducing the pounding a little bit. The gun is a square butt. Thanks.

I like the Deselerator from Pachmeyer, the Houge is OK, but a little squishy. I have found with high recoil revolvers, the palm of my hand is what gets the most punishment. Maybe a good leather glove with double palm would be worth a try. 0 -
The Pachmeyer grips have done the job for me, with both a Ruger Super Redhawk and my new Super Blackhawk. If it's still a bit much, try a "PAST" brand shooting glove. Built-in recoil absorber in the palm.

Since the grips that come w/ the S&W are about as unergometric as they possibly can be (the grips get larger at the base where your fingers get shorter) a good wood grip may also suit your needs. I have a set of Eagles on my 629 and I don't mind the recoil because the recoil is distributed over my entire hand. I believe it was Hogue that used to make grips from a tracing you sent them for your hand. I try to stay away from rubber grips because if you make a bad grab and need the gun in a hurry, it takes time to adjust your grip vs. a wood grip.

what I found to work well and a lot of my customers have agreed is the combat finger groov grip from pachmayr or Hogue....

I also like the Pachmayer decelerator grips, and have them on most of my revolvers. Past gloves are also fine, but with the decelerators I don't need them.0 -
Depends on your hand size. I use the smaller service grips on my N frames. I can hold on much better than the large target stocks. 0 -
I am real partial to Hogue Monogrips. If you reload, you can use make up a softer working load or shoot some 44 Spl until you get used to the power and just increase the charge when you are ready.

The .44 does punish, especially if you like the hotter loads. Like oothers have mentioned, I prefer the Hogue monogrips. I'm partial to wood, and their finger grooves fit perfectly. You might consider .44 Special loads in your S&W if you just like to target shoot. If you hunt with it, then mag is the way to go, but for targer practice, I get a lot of enjoyment from Special loads. Also, you might consider porting the gun, that helps some folks.
