What type of .223 rifle to buy?
Looking for something of good quality, I like the kevlar/sythetic stocks and all black if possible. I like the remington 700 series rifle esp. the police model, but I dont know if they are completely worth the money for how much I use it (not much). What other brands are out there that are reliable and well built?
I mainly want to use the rifle for medium-long range (50-250+yrds.) I like to shoot mainly targets, objects (watermelons, cans, old cars, ect.) and occasional small game. What should I get?? I would like to stay around the $500 range (used) for rifle without scope. $600 range (used) with scope. Thanks a lot!

The Ruger model 77 would be tough to beat. It can be had with all the feature you mention and a heavy fluted barrel, you did'nt. They are tack drivers at all reasonable ranges in .223. Mine is topped with a leapold scope and has never disappointed me.0 -
Take a look at the Savage line up ... lotsa good deals there!

Kimber has a point; with Midway's new switch-barrel system for Savage rifles, you can have 2-3 favorite guns in one.
Otherwise, you could try T/c's Encore or Contender Carbines and have the same options in a single shot.
Ruger does make a fine rifle; stronger than almost any other, fantastic warranty service, accessories abound, usually under $450.

Check out the new savage rifles with the accurtigger. Savages are extremely accurate out of the box, and can be fed many different kinds of ammo which shoot well. Good luck 0 -
I have to agree with the other guys about Savage offering a great out of the box gun.If you like the Remington line as I do,go for it.You should be able to buy a new 700 ADL synthetic in a .223 for under $500.00.and I think you will be very pleased with it.[:D] 0 -
Recently purchased a new Savage 12fvss in a 223. Has the new accu trigger, syn. stock, heavy fluted barrel. Love the gun and paid 525.00. Have owned other Savages and they have never let me down. [:D] 0 -

I had a Remington 700 VSSF in a .220 Swift and it shot 3/8" groups at 100 yards. The VS model http://www.remington.com/firearms/centerfire/700VS.HTM would match your all black description better than the VSSF model I had, but they are essentially the same platform. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Remington heavy-barrelled guns (VS, VLS, VSSF, and all the Sendero variants).
If you want a .223 for the cheap ammo then it is hard to beat and will reach the ranges you specified with no trouble. But if you think you really want to reach out and touch something, then you might want to consider a 22-250 or .220 Swift instead. I'll bet once you start shooting 250 yards, then you'll want to shoot 400, then you'll want to shoot... You get the idea, the bug bites and it bites hard.0 -

Savage 12BVSS.Excellent rifle out of the box.Mounted a Elite 3200 on mine.Try to get the new model with the accua trigger system.For a little more money,look at the Sendero also. 0
