Seriously, I too have heard good things about the .300 Win Mag. However I can't speak from experience.
Another good choice is the rather obscure 7.5X55 Swiss. Though the current crop of Swiss rifles are very accurate, even match grade, none of them are quite what I think you are looking for, but a good Hammerli match rifle in this chambering would certainly fit the bill.

I just picked up a 30-338, in a Ruger 77..I haven't worked up an accuracy load for it yet, but I understand when one holds one's tongue just right it's a tack driver at loooong distance..Anybody out there have a good load to start with???? 0 -

buy a used REMINGTON MODEL 721 bolt action rifle in .30-06 with a 24 inch BBL (several for sale on GB right now in the $300.00-$400.00 range) purchase a scope in the $100.00-$200.00 range (BSA 3-9X40 ILLUMINATED RETICLE/TARGET KNOBS) and add some FEDERAL 168 GR MATCH KING BOATTAILS and you will have a light, versitile, better than M.O.A., affordable tack driver. its the strongest bolt action ever made (HATCHERS NOTEBOOK) and can be dropped into a CHOATE tactical synthetic stock with only minor fitting(for the model 700). the triggers are adjustable already.
.30-06 is loaded over a wider bullet wieght spectrum than any cartridge in history. from the 55gr and 88gr ACCELERATOR sub-munition sabots to the 220gr and 250gr barnes safari bronze solids. there isnt a gun shop in north america that does not carry some .30-06 AMMO. it is perhaps the most researched and versitile caliber that exists. surplus ammo for practice and plinking is easy to get, and of surprising quality. best regards, mike.

mrmike08075, Yep, a .30-06 in any rifle is great. However, surplus .30-06 is very hard to come by and is expensive if you can find it. It hasn't been made for eons.
hitman#1, why not a .308? Lots of rifles around, lots of surplus ball, lots of history as a tack driving target round too.0 -
300 wsm would be my suggestion............you get the performance of the 300 win mag, maybe a touch better, in a short action gun. I've got one and just love it. Mine is the winchester model 70 Coyote and I couldn't be happier for under $600. In my opinion the wby mag and the rum in 300 are a little heavy on recoil, but good choices if you're not recoil sensative. Depending on your application, the .30-06 could be a great choice also due to the versatility in reloading as mentioned earlier by mrmike08075. I must however respectfully disagree with his suggestion of putting an inferior underpriced optic on board. I feel very passionately that this is the biggest mistake shooters make. My theory is that a decent gun is made much better with good optics, but a super gun is ruined by cheap optics. I'd much rather have a decent gun with great optics. My suggestion is to NEVER put cheap optics on a gun. Again mrmike08075, please don't take offense to my suggestion, I just don't think anything positive comes from cheap optics.............Leupold would be the least quality I'd mount on any gun I really wanted good results from, but if money isn't a big issue, throw a Zeiss or Swarovski on board your firing iron and you'll be a smilin'.......

You want the ultimate 30 cal. get yourself a SVD Dragunov(7.62x54r) it is inbetween a .308 and a 30/06, the one I have is a real tack driver and the max effective range is about 1300 to 1500 yards.[8D]

best group i have shot with it is .198" three shots at 100yds prone with a versa pod bipod...one of these days i will get some time to test some reloads i made and at longer distances to see if it will do better,the group mentioned was shot with factory grey box federals loaded with 150gr sierra game king bullets .

1. we can all design a shooting platform, and accsesories in our minds that spec out in the thousands of dollers price wise. i was trying to provide a readily available gun, scope, and cartidge combo that would not break the bank. my father owns/built this particuler set up, and it shoots ragged one hole groups with 5 round of surplus ammo at 100 yds.
2. scopes... i own several high end, high price, high quality scopes. i also own a large quantity of cheap, low price, mass produced scopes. while its true that you get what you pay for, its not always nesscesary to pay top doller to get decent optics.
if you are going on a "once in a lifetime" big game hunt, if you are a military/law enforcement tactical/sniper, if you have the money to burn, then buy the best scope you can find at any price. most of us are buying our scopes for under $100.00 at big chain stores, gun shows, or discount cataloges. i personaly think that you can get some good scopes at good prices under $200.00. more of us own tasco, bushnell, and wall mart brand scopes then ziess, luopold, unertl, kowa, etc...
3. .30-06 surplus ammo: its at every gunshow, gunshop, shooting catalog, etc... the dutch .30-06 surplus on 8-rd garand clips is good stuff, and cheap. the koreans are producing milspec .30-06 on U.S. surplus equipment that is very nice, and very cheap. even the russians are making .30-06 for sale in the export market. i just purchased two ammo cans of mil. .30-06 from the CMP at a teriffic price. the U.S. gov. made it by the ton well into the 1980`s.
4. we stock about 10 mil. surplus .30-06 types at the shop right now. some priced in the $8.00-$12.00 per 20 rd range.
5. i am not offended, or looking for an argument, i just think that the package listed is affordable, accuratte, available, user friendly, and versitile. best regards, mike.
