Scope for a Savage 110
.308. Came with a Simmons which lasted 40 rds before some piece of flotsam showed up inside the tube. Before that happened I was dancing on the shooting bench with the way the rifle performed. I've been looking at scope options and have narrowed it down pretty well but I always like to check with this group before I make any purchases. Nearly as I can figure, there's about 3,000 years worth of experience here. Any suggestions or comments greatly appreciated.

I'm kind of shocked that the simmons failed so quickly.
might be mfg. defect. I'd send it in.
I can't offer any advice on scopes, there's such a wide margin between makers and prices. so many situations. ie. low light, bright light, fixed magnification, variable, the list goes on and on. I own simmons, leupold, bsa, bushnell, some I have no idea what they are, and they all perform great. How serious do you want to get with it. However; the finest scope I personally have ever looked through was a Swarovski. Man what a scope, Man what a price tag.
I look mainly at eye relief and clarity, I don't care much for the so-called range finder variations. I like a good mil-dot or fine cross-hair. I recently purchased one of the leupold lighted reticles but have not had a chance to use it yet. I'm gonna mount it on My 700 bdl in a 17 centerfire. Good luck on your choice.0 -
trsmith5 - More an issue of justifying a $400 glass package on a $300 rifle. Will likely go with a fixed power Leupold and as fine a crosshair as I can get. Return the Simmons? Yeah, they'd probably make it good but the thing retails for under $40 so it's not worth the effort. I hear you on the rangefinding gadgets. Scopes are delicate enough without all the gingerbread IMO.
