Best scope for Winchester model 70,30-06 ?
I am planning my first deer hunt this fall. I have a very nice Winchester model 70 in 30-06 caliber that I am learning to shoot.My parents say they will spring for a scope sight if I will keep the cost under $100 .I have only looked at scopes at WallMarts and in Cabela's catalog, they have plenty of scopes for under a hundered bucks but I dont know what all the numbers mean ex.3x9x32?.
I want the best scope I can get for the money that is best suited for my rifle,

The numbers are scope power and objective size
IE: 4x32 is a fixed 4 power (4x magnification only) with a 32mm objective (front) lens. A 3x9x50 is a variable power (3x to 9x) with a 50mm objective. AO means Adjustable Objective (just so you know).
With glass, you get what you pay for. There's a reason the most recogmended scopes cost from $250-500 (and it's not brand loyality).
The rule of thumb that I've always heard is that the optics cost should be (about) the same as the rifles cost.
IMHO your better off with the factory iron sights than with a cheap scope.
Any chance of finding a good quality USED scope?
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

If you are limited to the $100 you can't get any 'good' scope. But that said there are several cheap scopes from several manufactures out there. I would recommend you get a 1.5 X 4 or 1.5 X 5 but the highest power you should consider is a 2 X 7. There are several reasons for this, but the most important is eye relief. The lower price scopes have a reputation for the lack of eye relief and on this class of scope IT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION FOR YOU. (The higher the magnacafacation have less eye relief) Second, most people are way over on the magnafacation for a BIG GAME. Also I have noticed the lower power scopes are usualy lower in price, when comparing a simualr 'line' of scopes, than the ones in that line of a higher power.(You will get more for your money with a lower magnafacation scope) Thus I think it would be a win, win situation for you.

Redtail - If you stick around one of these forums very long at all, you'll find that there are a lot of people who are what I'd call "Scope Snobs". They usually say things like, only this brand or that brand or you absolutely must spend this amount of money. To each his own, but I say HOGWASH.
Yes, if you're spending a bunch of money for a hunting trip or trying to win some shooting match, don't risk it on a marginally reliable scope.
If you are just starting out, you may not be inclined to invest the dollars - and there is nothing wrong with that. If your choices are buy inexpensive scope & hunt or can't buy nice scope and sit at home, I know which one I'd pick.
For a scope under $ 100, I like the BSA Catseye 3-10 X 44. I have a few of these, well used with no problems. Not all of BSAs' products have good reputations, but I have yet to hear anything bad about this particular model. Leave it on 3 power until you've shot alot or have a steady rest.
More important that your scope, learn your rifle. Buy some cheap military surplus ammo and shot a bunch of it. Shoot from all positions, prone, sitting and offhand. Shooting from a bench is great fun and will show you what you & your gun are capable of. But don't get too attached to the bench.0 -
I have been looking at the 1.5X4.5 Cats Eye scope by BSA after reading you guys coments.Its $59.99 in Cabela's,that will leave me enough cash to buy a mount.
I promised my folks I would bring my algebra grade up to at least a B if they would buy this scope for me,(that is going to be realy hard for this dumb redhead)so you know I realy want this scope to make a promise like that.
BY THE WAY KX500,you know anything about ALGEBRA-2?

Joyce, there are a few auction sites you can check for scopes. You can get a good quality rifle scope for about $100. Some of the Redfield scopes sell for this. They are about one step from top of the line. Good luck. 0 -

I'd suggest getting the best eye relief possible or you might have an impression that you won't be much impressed with[:D]
I don't know your size but a 30-06 has got some punch to it.
BSA's are good for the money. Simmons are good for the money
even a tasco will get you through many seasons. But as said before, stay with a fixed power for starters 3x-4x so you'll get the most eye relief
I learned real fast that algebra is an important part of the real world. I graduated 20 years ago and use it almost every day.

I've had good luck with Bushnell Banners (various powers and configurations) for inexpensive scopes. Someday you'll be able to buy better but I've yet to have one fail on me. 0 -
When I scoped my Yugo 48 Mauser, the guys at the gun shop sold me a 3X-9X Bushnell for $79 (beore tax.) They assured me it wasn't a "cheaply made" scope, and could take the beating that firing 8mm Mauser factory loads would dish out---a point I raised at the time, being willing to dish out more for a decent, durable scope. 8mm Mauser factory loads are maybe a pinch below .30-'06 in power (a debatable point, some would say,) but in any case the magnification-adjustable Bushnells in this price range would, I think, see you through nicely. 0 -
Redtail - Ahh the joys of Algebra 2. Unfortunately, I didn't pay too much attention to that kind of thing in high school, so I had to take it again in college. But that way it was relatively fresh for the calculus courses. So if you plan to go further in math, studying is a must (pay now or pay later). And really a B grade for a scope is a pretty good deal.
The advice you're getting here on eye relief is good. My BSAs are mounted on guns that kick and they actually do have good eye relief (around 4 inches). If the 'eye relief' term is new to you, it is bascially how far away from the scope you can keep your eye and still be 'in focus'. When the rifle recoils & the scope hits you in the head because you don't have enough eye relief, you quickly realize how important proper eye relief is.0 -
I shot a scoped rifle for the first time today,"NEAT", I cant wait to get mine.
My stepdad and I went to the "SAND BANK" to target practice with some 150 grain shells today(you guys were right they dont kick as hard as the 180s)Anyway, there were a couple of men there shooting,one fellow had a Ruger 7magnum the other had a Marlin 30-30,both rifles had scopes on them and they let me shoot.I HIT THE TARGET EVERY TIME!! I never could with my Winchester.The 7magnum kicked hard but the 30-30 was fun to shoot but I didn't like the hammer thing,I guess its OK once you get used to it.
You just wate till deer season ,I'l show the BIG BOYS something.
