1892 Winchester
Is it possible that Winchester made the 1892 in stainless steel? If so how many were made in which model and caliber? Thanks for the info.

I have a Winchester model 1892 carbine in 38-40 cal. The serial No. indicates that it was made in 1894. Since I figure that this was a black powder era would this gun be safe to shoot with modern ammo.? The rifle seems to be in pretty good shape. I know it should be checked by a smith ect. I guess my question is would it be safe to shoot it with modern ammo if it passed that test. 0 -
Hi ya...I would recomend you stay with the black powder loads from black hills all they are are cowboy loads...even if it does past the modern ammo test you may develope stress cracks later on, and then "BOOM", the metal of old was designed to take the black powder round and that is realy what you should stay with.

Many years ago Whinchester loaded a high velocity round for the 38-40. 180 gr. @ about 1700 fps. I'm sure that a lot of them were fired through Model 92's, but I agree with range37. You would kinda be "proof" testing it every time you fired it with full power loads. 0 -

WINCHESTER has been mispelled since the end of 1963![:D] 0 -
the commercial .38/40 loads avaiable now aree very light, intended for the win. m-73 and older colts out there. if your m-92 passes the gunsmiths inspection you should have no problems shooting it. as noted there used to be a h.v. load for the .38/40 but this was discontinued long ago. stick with the cowboy action or commercial loads and you'l be ok. 0
