Two suggestions: Check out savagearms.com for the owners manual. I don't know for sure that they have one for your rifle, but it would be a place to start.
Also, when I shortened the barrel and stock on my Model 88 Winchester, I lost the front dovetailed barrel to stock screw. I also wanted to free float the barrel, so I drilled and tapped the front sides of the receiver and added two screws to hold the stock tight. It has worked extremely well for over 15 years now.
    Good luck.

I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!

I have to send a letter to Savage, they do not accept E-mail. I went ahead and reblued, refinished the stock and left the barrel band off. I will shoot it some to see what it does. If it works out then I will inlet the stock chanel to completely free float it. There is not much room to tap the receiver. It has a detatchable magazine that takes up most of the extra space that would normally be there. Thanks for the advice.
