50-70 Trap Door Springfield
Does anyone know what a Trap Door Springfield ,caliber 50/70, serial 2806 might be worth?It is in good condition,has brass with it,and if the guy can find it the bullet mold.

Surprisingly not as much as you might think. The .50-70's were generally conversions of, I think, the 1863 Springfield muzzle loaders. I've seen average examples for as little as $700 and really nice ones for over $1150. A friend of mine recently bought one from Cabelas(read slightly overpriced) for $850. Condition was just around average but action was very tight. That's something you have to look carefully at if you intend to shoot them at all...some of them have a very sloppy trapdoor fit. Bottom line say $700-$1000. With dies and brass it becomes a better and better deal. I think Oldwestscrounger sells 20 rounds of .50-70 for around $50. That gives you something to compare to what you are getting. Beach 0 -
Was the Trapdoor 50/70 called the Allen Conversion which was later changed to 45/70???? 0 -

The 1st "Allin" conversion was the Model 1865 but in .58
The 2nd "Allin" conversion was the Model 1866 in .50/70
These were not serialized.

the total production/conversion run for the ALLIN CONVERSION MODEL 1866 RIFLE was around 25,000. these guns were model 1863 percussion muskets and were altered at SPRINGFIELD. the 40" civil war BBL was bored to a larger diameter with a liner tube of .50 caliber inserted and brazed in place. there were 3 BBL bands with band springs present. the bolt was lengthened, a firing pin spring and a redesigned stronger internal extraction system were installed. these features allow you to differentiate between the MODEL 1865 and the MODEL 1866. the BREECHBLOCK should bear the "1866" date over a FEDERAL EAGLE proof. the mounting, finishes, and other details remained identical to those found on the MODEL 1863 MUSKET. there is a more scarce, rare shorter 36" BBL varient, with 2 BBL bands believed to be ARMORY original. these command about a 20% premium over the 3 band 40" BBL model. i think that top dollar price in NRA VERY GOOD condition would be near $1000.00, but these guns often do not realize, or sell at there top dollar BLUEBOOK potental. i think you have a relativly rare piece of AMERICAN firearms history. best regards, mike.

ALLIN PATTERN guns remained regulation U.S. ARMY firearms until the introduction of the KRAG-JORGENSEN in the early 1890`s. they were then gradually withdrawn, serving with the NATIONAL GAURD until late 1905. those that remained on the official inventory after WWI were stored for the use of state militiamen until the early 1920`s. some guns were retained for training use is gaurd, militia, and reserve units.

The site 101AIRBORNE posted is where I'd go. It's exceptionally cool. I had a .45-70 trapdoor carbine and traded it off. If I live to be 100 and before I get shot by the jealous husband, I'll never trade anything off again. Even the Savage 24 I got in trade for the carbine. My butt hurts bad from all the kicking of myself I've been doing lately. Didn't buy the mint Portugese contract K-98 Mauser, didn't spend the $500Cdn for the BAR when it was no big deal, sold my GI issue .45, didn't buy the semi's Thompson M1(bought a real semi's M-14 so it wasn't that bad. Couldn't field strip the chopper due to the way it was semi'd thus I wouldn't be able to clean it properly ), didn't buy an SMG when it was no big deal. Did buy the 1903A4 for $175 Cdn though. I'll stop whining now. Go to the Trapdoor site. Lots of really neat stuff there. They start at $800USD. 0
