good price on Colt 45?

i have found a Colt 1911 in great shape for $500. i dont know what to look for in this gun as far as problems as i am only familiar with revolvers. is there any info i can provide as far as markings on the gun that will help you guys? thanks, you guys are the best!

  tenniso, Good question.
  I learned by asking the same questions on this board.
  first of all is the serial number and all stampings on the gun will be needed. just be sure to x out the last three digits as these are not needed ie. 4515xxx
  The finish is also critical in the guns value.
  www.colt.com has all the answers.
  Alot of these guns were rebuilt in the 60's and should have the armory's stamp on it for example A.A. augusta armory.
  Is it parkerized or blue??

  Check to make sure that the frame and slide (receiver) are the same company, also if it is a 1911 or 1911A1. If it is a Colt and both the frame and slide are marked $500 is a great price, I would buy it at the drop of a hat. Good luck.
