    Looks like it was for the , MEDICAL DEPARTMENT U.S.Navy-Utility knife, WWII, Made during the war, And sold after the war to Sportsmen. I have a few in the 3-blade and 4 blade. Handles are IMITATION bone. [^]

    My opinion: This is a fairly common survival raft knife (MD may be the state of Maryland instead of Medical Department). One I had showed a year of manufacture on the main blade. It is all stainless steel, but they came with a really dull blade and mine was really hard to sharpen properly. Not a whole lot of value (~$10 tops), but interesting.

    I suspect it was one of those good ideas, but not very practical - much like a whistle in the raft survival kits. They were supposed to be for attracting attention and communicating between rafts, but we always said they were to entertain ourselves. Similar item was pre-chemlite battery powered light. Light was small and weak and batteries were always out of date/corroded.

    I don't know why Camillus would put MD, for the state of Maryland[:o)] They were made in Camillus, New York. If you get Book III, M.H. Cole, look page 132 - 133 it will show you knife. The Cole Knife books are the BIBLE to most military knife collectors.[^][^]
