Shipping Priority Mail??

New to GunBroker, have just sold a couple of guns - 1 pistol. I thought all handguns had to go FedEx Overnight Priority. Why are sellers advertising USPS Priority and UPS? No way can anyone compete with their shipping quotes for similar merchandise.

  F.F. L. dealers and people who ship through FFL's, can ship handguns through the U S P S and U P S. We peons don't have that option, it's FedEx or nothing!

  UPS is available, but they only accept firearms from nonlicensees if they are being sent for repair. They require that handguns be sent by Next Day Air.
  
  FEDEX has similar restrictions, except they require Next Day Air for ALL firearms.

  Here in Maine anyone can ship a handgun or rifle thru a U.P.S. dropoff.No questions asked.I tell them what's in the package and they just don't care.Shipping a rifle thru U.P.S. is much cheaper than the Post Office.

  Can't agree with you on this matter Nmyers. FedEx DOESN'T have a restriction on shipping firearms by non licensees "For Repair Only"
  You ARE required to inform them your shipping a firearm, and have it shipped through their "Priority Overnight" service, which is very expensive!

  Obviously shipping improperly through the USPS is a federal offense but what are the consequences for shipping improperly through UPS or FEDX ? I'm thinking in terms of shipping regular delivery while complying with the federal requirement to ship to a FFL. Are these not business policies they have enacted. What are they going to do, put your name on their black list?

  If you make a insurance claim regarding "LOST" or Stolden or Damaged firearms. That you have shipped though these (2) Common Carriers. Without notifying or shipping them per "THEIR" regulations and requirements. They don't have to honor the claim even though you have insured them for full value.

  rufe, I never said that FEDEX allows nonlicensees to ship firearms only "for repair"; I said UPS does. Both carriers have similar tariffs that only require that sender or recipient have a license; due to poor training & poor management, most UPS counter employees will refuse to accept a firearm from a nonlicensee unless it is for repair. Arguing with them, or even showing them their tariff, does no good.
  
  Federal law (GCA '68, Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide ATF P5300.4) requires nonlicensees to notify a commmon carrier that a package contains a firearm. Licensees aren't required to do this, but the insurance coverage would be enough reason for them to notify the carrier.
