so how does a MAS 308 compare with a springfield M1 308?

  "...springfield M1..." As in Garand or M1A? That's a lot of "converting" for $200. I'd lean towards the MAS the way it was intended, but use a Garand or my M-14. Just remember you get what you pay for.

  The MAS rifles that were converted for 7.5mm to .308 were for issue to French troops stationed in Germany, the reason was so that they could use the NATO 7.62mm x 51mm ammo. You will find these weapons are being imported into the US by several firms. The Springfield 30-06 is a far better weapon, if you are looking for a semi-auto you have a choice between the clip fed M1 in 30-06 or the mnagazine fed M14 in .308 or 7.62mm x 51mm, stick to the American weapon, more money, better weapon and our weapons have been fired.
