M-4 Barrel

An M4 barrel has an O.D. of .745" from the front sight forward except at approx. 1-1/2" from the front sight, the barrel tapers down to .625" for 1-1/4" to allow for the mounting of the M203 grenade launcher. A standard Colt H-BAR barrel will have an O.D. of .725" from the front sight forward. Although the M4 looks interesting and has a very sightly larger diameter, unless you have an M203 that you are planning to mount, I'd stick with the H-BAR. These are actual measurements taken with several of my restricted dealer sales sample AR-15's and my own micrometer. The opinions however are off the top of my head. A real U.S M4 Carbine or restricted rifle will have a 14" barrel while the civilain versions have a 16.1" barrel. The 14" barrel is a little handier...but not enough to justify the $200 NFA Tax.

And there you have it. Unless you're hang extra hardware
from the barrel, why go to expense of re-barreling?

The question was in reference to an ar-15 im looking at buying.I can get it with either barrel. You dont think the m-4 barrel is worth paying a little more for? I got the impression you guys were talking about class III.

    WHAM,BAM, Goodbye Saddam!
