removing cosmoline
I just picked up a Mauser98 that still has the cosmoline in the barrel. I need to know the best way to remove this stuff. Thanks in advance.

Best thing I have found is to take the barreled receiver out of the stock. Clean the metal parts with brake cleaner and the stock with a citrus based cleaner (citrus Formula409 works real well). Rinse, dry and oil all parts as needed.

Thanks. Acutally, the cosmoline is only in the bore. I planned to remove the barreled receiver out for cleaning to be sure no cosmoline is anywhere else. OK, spray brake cleaner sounds good to me.

Hoppe's No. 9 on a patch will take out cosmolene. WD-40 is also good for removing grease, dirt, sticky stuff, etc.

If you can, drop the whole thing in a tank of mineral spirits. In the olden days, when I worked in a gun store, we got a bunch of mint K-98's in. Jammed packed full of cosmoline. We dropped the entire rifle into a tank of mineral spirits and left 'em there for a few hours. Then just cleaned 'em the way you always clean a rifle. Ok, we had some compressed air to blow 'em out. Either way, mineral spirits is/are the best non-flammable relatively non-toxic solvent. 0 -
The last foe 98 and 48 I got in had to have bolts disambled and clean also, so full firing pin would not move, mineral spirits works the best for me also, same also for the stock, if you do not have tank use 5gal. bucket and rag, wash off with hose and dry, have fun[:)] 0 -
About 10 years ago a friend of mine a machinist told me to buy "PB Blaster" in a spray can to clean a gun and it worked excellent.I have been using this product since and it has always worked better than expected.[:D] 0 -
Boiling hot soapy water. Works great on metal and wood to remove cosmoline. I cleaned a SKS whith hot soapy water and my son used brake cleaner on another. Mine took less time and was cleaner! Just my 2 cents worth![8D] 0 -
Purple power from Wal Mart is absolutely the best for cleaning the stock. Spray on, let sit 15 min, spray, let sit... do this until the residue coming off shows no grease mixed in. Then rinse with very hot water and let dry. Only problem- it will lighten cartouches so it is only for basket cases. In your case, I would use first a dry patch to push most cosmo out the bore, then one soaked in kerosene, alternation with dry until clean.

Anything in a rattle-can will cost you 20-30 times as much as good old gas-oh-leen & do a lesser job with more effort.jmho

I used hot soapy water. Took down all the smaller parts and put them in a large coffee can with almost-boiling water and dish soap...worked pretty well. I used mineral spirits on the stock and it worked very well also. Was kinda scared of using the minueral spirits on the actual gun...didn't want to ruin anything..but it all worked well like this.

Kerosene works better than gasoline and a lot safer.
